Friend shot a 1.5-2.5 year old doe yesterday morning. Range was around 60-70 yards. Gun was a Savage 110 in 7mm WSM. Not sure on the bullet.

Deer was broadside when he shot. Blood spray from the impact covered a 10' area behind the deer. Following the blood trail was like walking along the double line on a road. Deer still ran about 125 yards before piling up.

Shot got both lungs and a piece of the heart. I've made similar shots with a 7mm08 and 120 gr. bullets and had them run less than 10'.

Well, I have killed several with .177 single pump pellet gun and did it with one shot each. Go figure. Still a mystery to me. I also know friends who have done the same thing.

Really
I'm not saying it's not possible for the pellet to kill a deer, I just don't understand why you would be doing that? It is not legal in WI, and I doubt it is legal there.

I have shot and killed 6 raccoons this year. Unless hit on the head, they sure run fast and furiously. On Saturday, I shot one with 9x19 somewhere in the center mass. He ran. Luckily he ran down the ravine away from then came back up which slowed him down enough for me to catch up to him to finish him off.

Only one dropped immediately. Even then, it thrashed on the ground for 30 seconds (looks like it was running on its side).

Animals are hard to kill.

We shot six deer last year and they all ran at least 50 yards before collapsing. All lung/heart shot. One even jumped fence.

Many years ago a poacher told me he was using a .22 to make one shot kills on dear.

fyi, I don't condone poaching or using an underpowered firearm to hunt. And yes the guy did get caught in PA for shooting a doe without a doe permit.

Shot a small doe 2 seasons ago with a 150 grain .308. followed the blood trail for over 1000yds and she was still alive the next morning. i finally gave up.

The more I thought about it the more I am convinced it was my fault. It was a head on shot and I believe I hit to one side instead of center of chest and just hit muscle.

My friend blistered a doe with a Hornady 3" mag XTP 12 Ga. Slug at 50 yards last week.
Liquified the lungs, blew the heart into itty-bitty pieces and the slut still ran 35 yards
before falling over.

The way a deer responds to being hit is interesting. I shot one with a bow through the heart at 10 yards and it didn't even act like it was hit. It ran around 5 yards when it heard the string, then just walked around for about 10 seconds, then toppled over.

I've taken out lung and broken shoulder with a slug and had them run 50 yards, and had the blood trail have pieces of lung tissue in it.

You never know what they will do.

Oh come on guys! He had the deer tied up and shot it with the muzzle right on the base of the skull and severed the spine. Then when the deer quit kicking his Azz he stabbed it in the jugular.

I mean I killed one with my daisy red rider that way once a long time ago on another planet.

Stuff I've read about shooting people says that even with a bullet through the heart a man can fight effectively for 10-15 seconds.

Think how fast a deer can run and how far they can go in 15 seconds.

Deer are not hard to kill, they just have a strong flight reflex to get away from danger and can run very fast.

Friend's grandfather killed a buck opening weekend of rifle season that had an arrow lodged right under the spine. The broadhead broke a blade off on the backbone and was lodged in the back strap for a month since he was stuck opening weekend of archery season. We had seen him several times since he was hit with an arrow and he had no problems.

I killed a spike last week that had broken his front leg at the shoulder blade that would run and land on it but couldn't walk on it. Deer can be very tough but can also die for no apparent reason.

I usually drop deer with a viscious stare. I have never had to chase one.

It's true, you never know what will happen when you shoot one.

Watched yearling deer run a couple hundred with liquefied lungs and enough blood pumping out each side to fill a couple gallon jugs...Watched a 4.5 year old 12 point buck drop in his tracks and not even twitch after a mediocre shot from a .243(young girl...first deer too lol)

Silly animals.

Good post. My buddy is a Detroit Police Officer and saved his partner by shooting the bad guy multiple times. My buddy is WELL over 200 pounds and he said the BG did 3 nearly full push-ups w/ his fat ass laying on top of him. Said the BG was a massive, muscle head, but still its crazy to think that a guy can do that after being shot three times, point blank.

A sling shot is a way more effective deer slaying tool.

I shot a 'coon last year with my bow at 10 yards. First one I ever had roll over and lay there dead. I think he was probably sick, since he came out well before dark.

This year I double-lunged a buck with my bow (100gr Montec G5 broadhead) and he ran 200 yards before dropping. Most of these Texas Hill Country deer really have to try hard to make it 100 yards when stuck like that.
