 Pretty intense this morning

Okay, this isn't really about deer hunting, but I figured if anyone would appreciate you guys would.

Today was the second to last day of squirrel season, and the weather looked nice so I took the morning off to head out to my favorite spot. It's public land and there's a nice stand of about 30-40 acres of beech and oak trees. It's pretty open and there's a nice creek that runs through it.

I went in and found a spot where I could hear some squirrels chittering away. So set down up against a tree, and pulled out the binos to look for Mr. Bushytail. After a few minutes of the wind blowing in my face I pulled my buff up over my nose, and kept looking. I heard some bashing around in the leaves. So I look over to my left.

Lo and behold, there are two deer about 60 yards to my left on the edge of the oak/beech stand, out by the denser wood walking North which is about the same direction I'm facing. I watch them until they go out of sight. A few minutes later I see something by the base of a tree about 40 yards out, North-Northwest of me. Squirrel? Nope, the deer are back and walking right towards me.

These two doe are slowly coming towards me. I've still got my binos up to my face, and I'm decked out in camo head to toe. Damn, why'd I leave my bow at home? The whole time I'm watching through my binos, and they're looking right at me. Sniffing the air a bit, looking back at me and just slowly stepping their way ever closer. I don't dare make a move or a sound, but they're close enough that the binos are more of hinderance to watching them. I'm wondering just how close they're going to get before they bust me. Some birds up the trees behind the deer make a racket, and both deer whip their heads around to take a look. I used that opportunity to lower my binos just enough to look over the top but still keep them up by my face.

The doe both look right back at me, and stomp their hooves. I don't move at all. They keep picking their way closer. I'm thinking damn if they get any closer and freak out, I'm at about eye level with them, of them could kick me right in the chest. So they get in a little bit further, and I decided that's close enough. I drag one of my feet a few inches through the leaves, the closer of the two let's out a little wheeze (It almost sounded like a squeal) and they both take off. That's when I realized how much I was shaking.

I paced off the distance to the spot of the closest one. 10 yards

I've only been hunting for about a month and a half. I thought that was pretty damn intense. I think I have a better understanding of people missing a shot because of "buck fever." I need to spend this summer getting more proficient with my bow so I'll feel comfortable enough to hunt with it. No squirrels came home with me, but it was still an awesome morning!

TL;DR: I went squirrel hunting, and I was sitting against a tree when two doe walked right up to within 10 yards of me. I know, CSB.

Thanks for that! Good stuff, it's a wild sensation when you are lucky enough to get them in that close.

Thanks for taking the time to read it.

I've seen plenty of deer while out and about, hiking, hunting, driving, etc., but never like that. I think the lead doe would have walked right up to me had I let her.

Just more more motivation for me to practice shooting my bow.

Any of you guys ever hear deer squeal? It sounded like a short sort of wheezy squeal or whimper. I've heard them snort before, but that was strange.

Cool story

I was sitting on the ground leaning up against a tree one time during ML season and had a mature doe come up and sniff the toe of my boot.

Damn. I think she would have got that close if I let her. I was just worried what she would do when she realized I wasn't a bush.

Cool feeling ain't it? Next, try and touch one. It's a cool feelig being able to get close enough to touch one. Spring turkey is a good time for it. I've had them walk right over my legs.
