building an AR as a home defense/personal defense/survival rifle. How does the forum feel 5.56 will do taking deer for food in a survival situation in GA?? Any thoughts?

Look in the outdoor deer hunting forum.

BTW, lots of guys use it. There is some good ammo out there for game animals.

Shot placement is the key with most calibers

It kills men with body armor, so I see no issue for deer.

I took a nice doe with mine this year using Winchester Ranger 64gr SP; took out both lungs & most of her heart. She went about 20 yards after the shot before she realized she was dead.

Is the .556/223 capable of taking most deer? Yes. But, as I'm sure many others will echo, using a good bullet & proper shot placement within reasonable ranges are what get it done.

took two hog's with 55gr fmj last year... chops in the freezer... first one walked up on one bedded, it got up an ran, so shot placement wasnt best even at under 30yrds, twas hit good enough ta slow it down were second shot put it down.. other hog, about same it got up from the bed, & stopped bout 20 yrd shot.. it only went about 20 yrds... got some 55gr hp this year ta try, yet ta see a hog... guess i'm an echo for the shot placement & reasonable range...
