Depends on terrain. In thicker brush I will start handcalls or e-caller with low volume, and work it up to pretty dang loud within 5-7 minutes. In big open country I start off loud and keep it that way.

rizzo, lately I have been hunting a large open area about 15 acres or greater, is this big enough to crank up the volume? it is surrounded by thickj woods/brush.

Crank it up! Start about mid level, but with an area that big don't be afraid to get loud. I never really reach full volume, but then again I generally hunt fairly thick terrain.
Placing it next to you basically removes one of the greatest benefits of an e-caller, which is removing the sound from your location. Without a remote the animals will come in still looking at you, though a little crafty placement of your call and a decoy could buy you a few seconds.
When I talked about volume above, I was talking about e-callers or hand calls, since I use both.
