If it's legal in NY to hunt over bait, try that first with a coyote. Once they associate the call with humans/gun fire they'll hesitate coming into it. Put out some road kill or deer guts if your season opened already. Put it out early afternoon and let it get stinky then set up and wait till dusk. If that doesn't work then try a call. Use a rabbit call with a squeal like it's hurt.

This is Les Johnson's website: Click to watch , There are videos from his TV show on the site, watch them to hear how he blows his call. Plus it's free entertainment for new guys.

You don't need an electronic call to call in coyotes/foxes. Hunters have been using mouth calls for decades with success.

The poster above me recomends hunting over bait, I would discourage that thought. You could watch a bait pile for weeks and never see a coyote. Just get yourself a good call, practice with it, practice the basic fundamentas of hunting, be ready to shoot and have fun. I've called hundreds of predators to the gun over the years and it never gets boring....

Kettle Creek Calls has some good mouth and bellow calls that are pretty easy to learn on. The Griz-N- Gray is amazing, there is a strange guy holding feeling up a coyote on their home page, Rizzo something I think, but don't let him scare you off.

I picked this set up at Academy for $20 on Sunday just to replace the GHC Government Hunter Cottontail that I had lost.

I used the howler for the first time this evening in combination with a Syco Tweety and called and killed a young male.
That's a testimony to how easy it is to learn on it.
The GHC is one of the easiest and best sounding calls that I use. Even when you do it wrong you call stuff.

The set came with an instructional DVD that explains the basics.

There is a ton of stuff on YouTube also.

I would loan you my copy of rizzo's book, but I would prefer you buy it. It does a very good job explaining the basics and will put you on the road to success.

ETA: It's nice to learn on your own property, but remember that overcalling educates the yotes. You need a good grasp of the basics and a firm plan of action to do any good.
It's very easy to ruin a piece of land and killing the coyotes that you have educated can be challenging. Call elsewhere as much as possible to apply what you learn to the piece of property that you want results on.
Learning to trap goes hand in hand with learning to call if your intention is to control the population.
Good luck!

yep. your best off learning to change up. I'd say most go out and squall a cottontail distress around me. God knows I've heard them more than once

I'll lip squeek them half the time. if they're within 200 yards it works well for me. No call needed that way
