Shooting 52-55 grain Hornady V-Max. Possibly heavier loads as well. I was thinking about the Nikon 223. Any other suggestions?

What range are you shooting those dirt bags?

4x16 or 5x20, and 8x24 for way out there.

most likely 300-400 yards max. Mostly eastern wa which in Coulee/farmland country.

I personally have a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 on my 223 varmint rifle. I'd recommend it.

Nightforce 2.5-10x24 NPR1 or Leupold 1.5-5x24 MK4

I agree. Been doing it that way for years.

For mine I use a Burris fullfield 2 3-9x in a Larue mount. This has taken the pain out to 600 yards using Hornady 75gr.

I use a Nikon Buckmasters series on my varmint rifle. They're good scopes for the money.

The BDC reticles are great for hunting at longer ranges. I prefer the Buckmasters BDC over the Coyote Special BDC. The Buckmaster has a normal center cross-hair, whereas the Coyote scopes use a circle in the center, in additional to the drop circles. The Buckmaster gives you a big more precision when you're not using the BDC.

Same setup here on my Remington. The Leupold VX-II 3-9 x40 is a hard setup to beat in my opinion.

I would go Leupold 3-9 also. I went 50mm with mine to get a real nice field of view, but the 40 will also work great. I would not recommend Nikon due to bad experiences with them.

A quality 3X9 is awfully hard to beat for most scope needs.

I would recommend a quality scope that has the best light-gathering and color-transmission properties you can afford. This will pay off on those dawn/dusk hunts in low-light.

For up to 400-500 yard ranges across open-ground, I would say a 4-12x or 5-15x would be ideal. For consistent 400-500 yard shots, a good 10x fixed-power would be a good choice, as well.

I really like the lower power optics. 99% of the time mine stays at 2.5x. When a dog is moving on you quick it can be hard to pick up with 4x or more IMO.

If you anticipate "in your face" shots 3x9 will slow you down. I prefer 1.25X5 with illuminated center dot myself. The 1X4 tactical scopes have potential as well.

I agree 100%! I even have a 0 power red dot mounted on the 1 O'clock position for up close. I've had those bastards run up on me from out of nowhere. Have burned a few of them with it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I went with a Leupold Mark AR scope 3x9x40 mil dot. Got a smoking deal from Optics planet. $311 shipped. Going to zero this weekend.
