Shot this pair this morning over a doe decoy and Foxpro Young Whitetail Distress call. In the stand and all set at 0710 hrs. Two on the ground by 0730 hrs! What a rush! My first coyotes too! Started hunting them about three weeks ago and this was setup number 22. Called one in on my very first hunt using a PowerDogg (couldn't get a shot) and have not seen another one since then (until today that is)! Decided to pony up for a FoxPro Spitfire which I received on Friday. Had to work the weekend so today was the first time out with the new call. Awesome! 55 gr Sierra Blitzkings didn't agree with them at all!

Where are you at in SC hunting them? I'm upstate, Fairfield/Chester county border.

Also, are they active this year?

I have a friend that pays to have them shot on his farm ( chickens/turkeys/cows ) a couple of miles down the road. They hadn't been active so far this year. They did a number on them last year.

Thanks Chase. Gave them both to the local taxidermist. He's gonna do a full body mount with the black one and a shoulder mount with the blonde.

I'm hunting in Windsor. Not too far from Aiken. The Midlands. I saw three this year while deer hunting. I'm a newbie to predator hunting so I can't tell you whether or not they are really active around here. I can say that I have not had any luck using Cottontail distress calls (don't know whether that's due to the other call vs my new Spitfire or due to me learning to do better setups, etc). Decided to try my doe/whitetail distress setup and it certainly worked. Actually the three that I saw during deer season (all three were black - saw them all at the same time) were coming to this same doe decoy in the same field where I shot these today. This is the first time I've used the doe decoy for predator hunting. It's the cheap inflatable one from Tinks. I let the air out of the front legs and had her almost face-planted (pic below). Like something was very wrong with her. That scene coupled with the Young Whitetail Distress call must have painted a picture of an easy, BIG meal. Sure fooled these two yotes. The black one came in to within about 15 yards of the decoy. Watching her like a hawk. The blonde came into the field about 50 yards from the decoy and was headed her way watching her too.

SWEET! I'll have to try that trick. The 'yotes around here are pretty wary.

Excellent job and good use of a decoy! Plus a black coyote on your first kill, very nice. I've never even seen a black coyote out here in the west.

Thanks rizzo. I saw three black ones during deer season all at the same time and a buddy just sent me a pic of a black one his son shot yesterday (in south GA). Go figure.

BTW, I saved the backstraps for you

Why not go ahead and eat 'em yourself? They're so delicious!

Had a little luck myself this morning. Hunting with a buddy from work. We managed to make two more "good" coyotes. The blond one came in to a Jackrabbit distress call at the very end of a set. Had decided to move and just gave the Jackrabbit a try for the heck of it. Less than a minute later she came charging in. Shot her on the run at around 50 yards just as she was heading back into the woods. On the second set, the black one comes out into the field and holds up at 170 yards in chest high grass/brush. Came to a fawn distress call and decoy. My buddy made a heck of a head shot (that was all he could see)! So we were two-for-two and feeling pretty lucky. Made one more setup down by a pond but had no luck there. I guess two out of three ain't too bad!

I wonder if the black ones are genes picked up/crossed over from domestic dogs.

I just came through Saluda about an hour ago. My son had a sporting clays tournament this morning at the Clinton House. Off topic I know, but he smoked it today with an 83! First year shotgunner too.

I got my doe decoy from Natchez Shooters supply. Don't know if they still have them in stock. Think it was ~$45. I also bought the frantic fawn decoy from them.

Thanks. I'm using a Leupold 2-7 VX-R. The low end is perfect for up close/running shots and 7X is plenty out to 300-400 yards. I'm really impressed with the VX-R's. I'm running the 3-9 Patrol version on my lightweight hunter bolt gun for whitetails. Clear and bright and I love the illuminated dot for dawn and dusk.

Nice winter coats on those two Scoop. Those would be worth skinning out for sure.

Just went digging around to see what I could find on this. Read a couple of different places that the black coat is more likely the result of inbreeding rather than crossbreeding with dogs. Here's a couple of quotes from one site.

"While there's a possibility the coyotes in the area have hybridized with local dogs, coyotes in suburban areas are far more likely to kill and eat domestic dogs than they are to mate with them. It's also unlikely that the black coloration of a domestic dog would be dominant to the wild agouti coloration of the coyote"

"Many different species of mammals can have mutant versions of the agouti allele that, when inherited in two copies, will be expressed. The appearance of a melanistic individual would suggest that your local coyotes are engaging in a bit of inbreeding––possibly because the population is relatively small and isolated"

Good thinking on the doe decoy.

Beautiful black yote as well, congrats. It seems like you are off to a quick start.

Two black coyotes? Now you're just rubbing it in my face.

And Wal-Mart sells a decent fawn decoy, actually, as would any major sporting outlet (Cabela's, Bass Pro, etc).

I got it rubbed in my face Monday morning by 'ole Wiley. Perfect morning. It was 18 degrees here. Clear and no wind. Just a perfect morning. Got my calls and decoy set up and had just sat back down when the coyotes started up. Hair on the back of my neck stood up. Love that sound. Gave them a couple of minutes and then hit 'em with a Jackrabbit distress call. 30 seconds into it a nice blond one shows up. Charged in at my sit-n-spin decoy. Pulled up short and did a 180 back towards the treeline. She was running straight away from me so I thought it would be a chip shot. I diddled while she widdled and the shot went wide. Oh well. So now I have my first miss under my belt. On the bright side, at least they're coming in to my calls/setups.

No love on this mornings hunt. 3 setups and not a yote in sight. Temp was 50 degrees this morning. Talk about wild weather swings. 18 degrees Monday morning. Raining and 40 degrees yesterday. Clear & sunny at 50 degrees this morning and calling for rain tomorrow.
