Ok, I was taken on my first Dove hunt this weekend and need I say I loved the crap out of it. I shot about 2 doves and fired ten shells. So Im told that is not bad for my first hunt as it was very slow. Experienced hunters only killed 4 to 5 that day and shot many more shells. I was using a wonderful old Lite 12 Browning shotgun autoloader. Im going again this week and only have my shotgun handed down from family, my mossberg 12 guage with a 26 inch (I think) barrel and C-Lect choke on the end. Now reading about these chokes it seems they are long gone and it was a love or hate relationship with them, but its all I got right now until I can afford a new barrel or an autoloader.

Anyone else shoot one of these hunting dove? Can I expect a big difference in shooting them as the Browning had no choke at all?

I'm not sure what a C-lect choke is, but if it's an adjustable choke like a poly-choke set it to somewhere between IC and Mod for doves.

Its an older choke system that Moosberg used for awhile. Thanks for the advice! I will give it a shot.

The Browning had no choke? Or the Browning had no external adjustable choke?

Either way try shooting at a piece of newsprint a few times with your mossberg. Screw the choke all the way in, and fire a round. Screw the choke all the way out, fire a round, then set it somewhere in the middle where you get the most pellets on target at whatever range you choose to shoot at.

I've run across alot of those old adjustable chokes that no matter where you set them they shoot the same. Usually comparable to IC, or MOD.

Just my .02

No pun intended, but it's a blast!

Good luck, and whatever you do, don't get wrapped up in side by side shotguns. They're more addictive than dove hunting by itself.

Man, I want a side by side so bad I can taste it. I tried the I need one approach with my wife, but she is a shooter also and knows I can hunt with that I have. It did not go over well.

Sure, you can hunt with what you have. But that's like––she can wear her sneakers to church.

A twin trigger SXS is the right tool for upland hunting. You can use various combinations of choke and shot, for near or far, big or small. Perfect if you don't know whether you're going to find a dove or a chukar or a pheasant. Put 7.5 and IC in the front barrel, size 6 and modified in the back barrel, and you're ready for anything. Or just IC and 7.5's both if the quail are flushing close...

JEBsGear,

I have a Western Field 16 ga. with C-Lect choke made by Mossberg that I have used on bird hunts in the past years and didn't have any problems with it. I like the 16 ga. cause if I'm blocking I can set it at Full for the longer shots or IC/Mod if I'm walking the fields. Got it at an auction for a really good price.

Do you mean the Browning doesnt have a screw in choke, or doesnt have a choke at all? What does the barrel?

BTW dove hunting is awesome, i was hooked last year...and now I want a SxS...lol

CZ Bobwhite has my name all over it...
