I am looking into going bear hunting in Pa this year for the first time. I have a ruger M77 mkII 338 win mag., what would be the best round for me to use?????

I would have to believe that any hunting round in that caliber would be more than capable of killing a bear. Try several brands and weights and see what your rifle prefers, then go hunting!! Good luck!!!

I have that same set up and use nosler partitions I am thinking about changing to barnes x bullets though

Killed many bears with a .308 never felt under gunned. Going to alaska in may for spring Brown Bear and taking my 338 win mag. I think thats alot of gun for blackies but if its what you have, use it. If you have a deer rifle I'd use that.

I got the rifle a few years ago as I was going to go to canada on a carabou hunt.. That fell thru but I still have the rifle, so thats what I'm going to use.. Thanx for the reply's

Oops didn't really read your post. If u are using a 338 I would probably go to a lower grain bullet 180, maybe 200 –– more that enough for blackies and not going to beat on you either.

Barnes Tipped Triple Shocks. Best bullet on the market for a boiler room shot on big game.

I have had expansion problems with barnes at loger distances. Close in the open up but after some distance and reduction in velocity they act like full jackets. great for breaking shoulders but not for boiler room shots.....

I have used 250 grNosler Partition bullets with success.
Probably any of the premium bullets will work well. I prefer the 225-250 gr but a tough bullet in a lighter weight may work well. Get something that shoots well and that you feel comfortable shooting.

The wound channels I've seen indicate fully open projectiles. I don't take long shots though. 250 max.
