My friend, who is a professional forester, sent me this game cam photo off one of his cameras in a state forest about 20 miles east of me....

I've heard the panthers roar in the night and you can hear them a long long way away, same for a screamin' diying hog too!

now I carry my rifle with me to the kill

Nice pic! Last year during gator hunting season, while driving to Gainesville from Lochloosa Lake (Hawthorne area) on Hawthorne Rd at about 3am, both my friend and I spotted what looked like a panther immediately off the road. We'd just seen dozens of deer and at first glance I assumed the creature was another deer, until I saw the long tail. If my friend hadn't asked me "did you see that?!?" I never would have believed my own eyes.

Can you tell me more about where the pic was taken? I work with some biologists and ecologists and we're always arguing about what my friend and I saw off Hawthorne Rd that night. They've all told me that I couldn't possibly have seen a panther, as they all live south of, or in, the Ocala Nat'l Forest. I'm about to share the pic with them, but it would be great to be able to tell them more about it

This was taken at the UF Kathryn Ordway Preserve south of Melrose and north of Palatka, or about 28 miles due east of Hogtown and a little bit north of Hawthorne....

NO WAY, Florida Panthers are a genetically endangered species, there are less than 100 animals left living in the wild.

They have introduced some Texas cougar genes into the population to try to diversify and increase their survival.

It is interesting to note that this Florida Panther does not have a radio frequency collar on him, of the 100 or so panthers known to be in the state, about 35 or so have radio collars on.

Interesting. We were on Hawthorne Rd around Lochloosa Creek ... maybe a bit east of where the highway 20 marker is labeled on the map.

Have they since radio-collared the animal?

I am out on the west side of Paynes Prairie near Wacahoota, but no, they have not put a radio collar on him.

I know Lochloosa WMA like the back of my hand and have shot many wood ducks in Lochloosa Creek, as well as Lochloosa - Cross Creek - Orange Lake...

It's perfectly legal in Texas to shoot them on private land. I think every public wildlife area has their own set of guideline on what can be killed, and with which weapon it can be killed with.

We have an area at our ranch that is real sandy. Everytime the river overflows it brings more sand. I was walking this area when I saw a track. My first thought were someones big a** dog had been running around. I went closer and quickly realized the track was bigger than my hand! I got out of there because it had to be fresh inthe loose sand. I talked to the family about it and I think my uncle or someone told me a rancher had a big cat attack one of his horses about 20 miles or less from us. We live in south texas. From what I understand they can have large areas that they hunt.

I think the normal feeding range of a cougar is about 200 square miles.

Perhaps the panthers might do a little better for numbers with such an abundant food source?

Wow, I never knew there were panthers in FL, very cool pic!

There's one way to keep the hog population in check... just need a couple hundred more panthers.

It would be interesting if the rising hog population leads to a come back for the panthers.

Funny. You guys are trying to make them stronger and multiply.

Here, ranchers will pay you to shoot them whenever seen.

It appears to have that genetically defective kink in the tail found in FL panthers. I have a friend that recently had a 100+ lb goat killed and dragged away by one of those north of Gainesville.

nick, that IS damned interesting - like the boom with the deer has been coupled with rising coyotes.
we are over run with deer and coyotes here.
