Question: There is a shitload more surplus 5.45x39 and 7.62x54R on the market than there is 5.56x45 or 7.62x51.

Were the Soviets much better stocked up than the USA or what? Can't really try to blame Iraq & Afghanistan either because the Soviets were in Afghanistan for 10 years and also supplied conflicts around the world.

Basically yes.

I would guess 10x more ammo on hand.

In my opinion communism was the reason for such massive stock piling. Communist workers show up every day, make exact same amount of ammo whether the military needed it or not.
