Help me choose between a 14.5" SR-15 upper and a taupe SR-15
So I've wanted a SR-15 ever since I first saw one and thought the taupe would be a cool change from all the black rifles. I also wanted to shorten it to 16" overall with a pinned flash hider. I was lucky enough to go to the SHOT show this year and the 14.5" upper seemed like a winner. The only problem I have with the 14.5" is that it's slightly heavier (I'm looking for short and light) and the price. I figure it will be $1750-$1800 once they are available, I'm willing to spend that but I've seen taupe SR-15's for under $2000. So the question becomes value, if I can get a whole rifle for only a couple hundred more than just the upper, is it worth it? It would be cool to have the latest and greatest but id think the taupe 16" gun will handle much the same as the 14.5.
What do you think I should do? I have a SR-15 lower so out of pocket will be about the same.
This?
Or
That
Easy. Get the 14.5 and have it coated with FDE. The new 14.5 has lots of features the old 16 ones don't.

I don't really care about the color, I just thought the taupe would be a nice change of pace. Besides the 3.1 rail (which I could add to any SR-15) and the ball milled barrel what else does it offer?
To me, it depends what you are currently doing with the SR-15 lower. If it's sitting around doing nothing, then get the 14.5" upper. Then again, when I got my SR-15, I changed the rail and a couple other things so if I didn't already own one now, I would be getting the 14.5" upper and going that route. Of course, I will propbably end up getting the 14.5" anyways because it's badass.

The SR-15 lower is being used with a 14.5" colt m4 upper, if I get the 16" gun I'll SBR the lower I have now. I have a urx II mid and a stripped SR-15 upper waiting for an 11.5" barrel. Also, like you said I could change the rail to a urx III or 3.1 easily but then again the 14.5 is badass.
Funny, I had the exact same quandary as you a few weeks ago! I have always wanted an SR-15 and also went to SHOT this year spending a disproportionate amount of time drooling at the Knight's booth. Before seeing the 14.5 at SHOT, I was all but ready to pull the pin on a taupe SR-15 and had sold a rifle to finance the purchase.
After some weeks of hem-hawing around debating with myself the merits of the two options, I saved up and sold more stuff and ordered the 14.5 upper, a Knight's lower, and a BC 1.5. Yeah, the 16 inch was less expensive, immediately available, and in taupe... But the 14.5 was what I really wanted, and to me it was worth the extra $$$/wait/effort.
