Odd Bolt Carrier On Colt Tactical Carbine

Got a phone call from a friend, he had just got a Colt Tactical carbine that had came from the California penal system. When he field strip the gun he found an odd bolt carrier system. I haven't seen the carrier in person but based on his description:

The carrier is the standard length, has normal bolt head, gas key, etc. The exception was on the back end of the carrier. The way he described it after the gas key the sides go straight back as normal but there is no "ring" at the back. The drawing hopefully shows it better than I can describe it.

What type of carrier would this be? Safe to shoot? Any ideas?

Not sure about your drawing. But it could just be a semi circle, half moon or what ever the hell it was called carrier that Colt used to install in rifles. I have one it works fine.

Like this? Some Colts used to come with these.

Sounds like a normal variation to me. A civilian AR 15 variation...somewhere around here is a pic of the various styles of carriers.

It was done to prevent unauthorize full auto converison. This was done in response to the LL drop in kit.

Just called my friend back, and he said that this was the type of carrier he had. Thanks

The Colt 6920 we have here at the border have that exact same post ban bolt carrier. is kind of funny, we (US Customs) here in Nogales have an ecclectic mix of Colt 6920s with 14.5" barrels and USGI M4 carbines with the auto sears removed and semi only selectors (with the exception of a couple that the SRT use); I am humping around a 6920 with the "half moon" bolt carrier; is odd, you figure us, being right next to the border (Nogales, Sonora, MX) would carry M4s with fun switches - guess not.
