6920 Basic vs Magpul
They're available for the same price, and both are in stock. Each one involves trade-offs in what I like.
- I know the Rogers stock generates a love/hate reaction here, but I have five of them that came with my rifles and I think they're fine. I think they're as good for me as a Magpul CTR since it has a friction lock, and I like them maybe a bit better than a Magpul MOE.
- I prefer the Magpul MOE grip by a wide margin over a standard grip. So much so that I would definitely switch it out if I got the basic setup, although I might swap the basic with an Ergo grip instead.
- I would use the Magpul MBUS over a carry handle, but the MBUS is only a $45 item. I'd be tempted to get the carry handle version, stow it and buy a robust BUIS though.
- All of my other rifles are free floated, so I don't know if the handguards will stay. If they did, I would think the Magpuls are more functional but don't know how much more so - I'd welcome thoughts from someone who has extensive time with both.
I guess the short of it is, I probably like the Magpul setup better since it's closer to the state I'd use the rifle in - but part of me says if I'm buying a 6920 I should buy the classic setup.
Thoughts?
I just picked up the Magpul version today from my dealer. Got it from DSG Arms and I love it!
sounds to me like you should go with the regular 6920.
you like the rogers stock, maybe even better than the moe (i would like having the friction lock, so unless it came with a ctr, rogers for me)
you may prefer the mbus, but the carry handle has a better resale value. you could put that up on the EE and put money towards a better BUIS than the MBUS (or buy an MBUS with the money if you like them that much)
handguard sounds like you may switch. moe handguard is only more "functional" really in the sense that it is IMO better for mounting rails to, and may lock up a little better than M4 or CAR guards.
sounds like you like the ergo grip better anyway, so might as well put that on either way if you like it.
IMO, if the magpul 6920 came with a CTR and a carry handle sight, I would definitely get it, but that isn't the case.
if you decided you really didn't like the handguards and didn't want to switch to FF, then the MOE handguard is like 30 bucks anyways, and i think someone would snatch up a set of colt handguards pretty quick on the EE.
either way you go, can't go wrong with a 6920!

Is the MBUS not robust? We ship thousands a week and they've proven to hold up quite well.
I purchased the basic, but without that super stock thing.
I know that this will put me in the minority here, but I really like the carry handle.

I prefer a forged carry handle over a plastic BUS as well.
The magpul version with a carry handle or matech BUIS would be more appealing to me.
I would like to try the super stock though. I have a standard Colt CAR stock that came on my LE6920, and a Magpul CTR, and am wondering how it compares to both.
I picked up my LE6920 two weeks ago which is the basic configuration with the detachable carry handle and Colt-Rogers SuperStoc stock.
My plan for my new carbine is to just make it as basic M4 issued setup, so far I had replaced the SuperStoc with one of my extra new Colt M4 stock, replaced the carry handle with my LMT rear BUIS (I might change it to a Matech BUIS later), and installed my VCAS sling, then later on I'll drop-in a Surefire light and an Aimpoint for sure.
I prefer my KAC M4 carbine RAS rails so I'll definitely get another one for my new carbine.
My SuperStoc works fine but it hurts my eyes every time I look at it, I prefer the looks of my Magpul CTR, but I'm using my SuperStoc now on one of my 6721 HBAR carbine.
Think about what configuration you prefer and get the 6920 version closest to it.
Just snagged the LE6920MP-R, I was really on the fence the same as you but I am glad I went with the magpul. Headed to the gun show tomorrow to get some more goodies to go with it!
If it was me I'd get the Magpul setup. Mainly because I greatly prefer those parts over what is offered on the basic. If I decided to swap anything out, I'd have usable leftovers. With the basic I would have spare parts that for ME would be much less desirable to use on another rifle. It would just go in the junk drawer.
As far as the MOE stock goes I wouldn't be concerned as much with the lack of friction lock as I would the absence of the QD socket. It doesn't bother me but is a must for many. I have several CTRs and MOEs. I've been lucky with stock/receiver extension fit on the MOEs. All mine are nice and snug. In fact some have a better fit than a couple of my CTRs with the friction lock set.

You sound like me. I have a LE6921 clone (rebarreled Colt upper with Colt 14.5" SOCOM barrel attached to a LE6920 lower) with a KAC RAS, VCAS sling, and CTR stock. I have my carry handle back on, but I have a LMT BUIS laying around that I thought about throwing on in prep for an Aimpoint or Eotech. I love this rifle, and it's my go to gun for HD, Hunting, plinking, and matches.

Justin,
That's not what I meant - I actually have 12 full MBUS sets plus a couple of rears, and they work fine for me. As I said, I'd actually prefer the MBUS functionally to a carry handle and would be fine keeping it on if I bought the MP.
However, speaking as someone who owns 32 AR/ACR/SCAR pattern rifles, if I bought the basic Colt I'd keep the carry handles in a safe somewhere and end up buying some rear irons. With the dollars I've sunk into the collection, a $60 price difference doesn't move the needle much so I'd probably buy a Troy or something similar versus another MBUS.
By "robust" I mean I wouldn't buy something flimsy. Back up irons are one of those things where if you need them, you'll really need them. MBUS is perfectly fine - there are many that are not however.

Yeah, you sort of hit it on the head - I am leaning emotionally towards the stock pattern 6920 but having second thoughts because the Magpul package seems like a compelling value if the price is the same. If it wasn't for the Rogers stock, I'd go Magpul without hesitation.
Of course, I've been tempted to split the buy (I was actually toying with buying two or three, since I own doubles of almost everything), but I can get consecutive serials if I stick to the same model. I know, I know... the consecutive serial thing is a completely useless emotional thing, but it is what it is.

I have a spare take-off Colt M4 stock from a 6940 lower, so if you want to trade the Rogers for it just let me know :)
This thread has served to underline for me how crazy I am:
- The cheap side of me wants to buy the model that needs the least upgrading.
- The parts-hoarder in me (which is winning) is pushing me to buy the one that needs more - I can then buy the extra stuff I want and sit on all of the nice stuff (like the carry handles) I would take off
It occured to me when thinking over the grip upgrade that with about 30 Magpul MIAD/MOEs, Ergos, Hogues, etc. - I have a 6920's worth of dollars sunk into pistol grip upgrades alone.
