Worst stake job I ever done
This is by far the worst stake job I ever done. Recently I have read threads of people using an automatic center punch to stake castle nut so I figured what the hell I will give it a try. Complete failure. It only displaces a tiny bit of material at a time. I had to do three separate punches. I started center like I always do and it moved a tiny bit so I thought well hell I must have not had close enough to the edge. To make a long story short I had to punch the center and the sides of the center punch to push enough material to barely fill in some of the notch on the castle nut. Now don't get me wrong it is definitely enough material to hold it under a lot of abuse but it looks like crap.

I'd take that staking any day over no staking. Is that a diamondhead rear BUIS?
Not the prettiest job, but it should do the job just fine.
Yeah those are diamondhead. It is all I run anymore on my ARs. I love the sight picture.
I know it will do just fine but it looks like a blind man did it.

That is what mine look like and I couldn't care less. As long as it is staked well enough to hold I am happy.
I have built over 20 rifles now and staked probably double that just from changing things out and never had it look so bad. Lesson learned. Use a punch and hammer for a cleaner stake job. It ain't worth it to me to break it and redo it because it will do its intended job.
Seriously, don't sweat it. It will work and the staking is not the most noticeable thing on a rifle anyway. The only people who will even notice probably won't care since it is actually staked in the first place.

+1 on the diamondheads. I just can't afford $240 a set to replace all of the ones I currently have.

I am not worried about it. It will work but if this were a job for someone else and not one of my own rifles I would break it and redo it. You are right that people probably wouldn't care as long as the job is done but I need people to like the look of all things on the rifle if I want people coming back for different work.
what's the problem? looks like it will stop the castle nut from unscrewing.
Yeah, I never could get those automatic punches. I run a hammer for living so they would never cross the radar screen.
I've seen it reported that the guys that use them have to strike 2-3 times to displace enough material.
If it bugs you, shape an old punch to leave an imprint like this and it will probably clean up.

I can dig around some of my stuff tomorrow and see if I have any extras sitting around. If I have any they are probably used but I wouldn't mind selling you a set (for less of course) if I have any. No guarantees because I think I may have sold the last set I had for the time being but I will be happy to look if you want.

Very true. Image matters when it comes to repeat business.
i just did a bad one too, i've only done about half a dozen but for whatever reason my latest one totally sucked, it pisses me off because my other ones look awesome, must have been drinking.

Throw some gloss black paint on it, and call it a Colt SP1-style job.

That will work. Take a marker to it and forget about it. Maybe you should practice on a piece of paper with the marker first though.

I agree. You fucked it up. lol! Seen guys screw it up with hammer and punch too.
I use a $5 spring punch and haven't ever had a problem.
I can't imagine anyone noticing much less find fault with it. If so, tell them it's been 'double staked' and abruptly remove the carbine from their hands

.
I doubt others would notice if I did this for them but I would because I always go over a rifle head to toe. Plus later on down the road if someone noticed they may be inclined to take up an issue with it. I have met some anal people and done work for some anal people. They want it done right and to look good too. Basically have their cake and eat it too.. I am happy with mine since i fleshed it out a bit more.
Half of my builds where only hand tightened until I got a barrel wrench. now I actually tighten the castle nut. I have NEVER had an issue with it. If I where a cop or in the mil I would do it for sure. But for just another range gun its totally unnecessary.
