What AR15 chambered in 6.8 SPC would you recommend for $1000 or under?

I have looked at the Stag model 5, Ruger SR556, and the Bushmaster XM15 so far. The RugerSR556 sounds like a bargain, but I am not a fan of the Troy flip up sights and integral FH.

The 6.8 BSP from bison armory looks real nice @ $999

Buy a good barrel/bolt and build your own. I go with ARP:

I bought a used RRA 6.8 upper from a buddy.

I see some postings about a type 2 or some mod, can anyone tell me how to verify or check, or what it is?

I did get a mag, and 40 rounds from the store, have not shot it yet.

thanks

I want a 6.8 but the lack of poly mags so far has detered me from purchasing 6.8!

It might be marked along the barrel somewhere, should be "SPCII". I'm not a RRA guru though so I don't know when they started making the SPCII chambers.

Bulding should help you save if you are inclined on building. The differences are bolt and barrel. If you are going for accuracy then spend you money on a quality barrel, trigger group and scope other wise it is very affordable compared to the .308 platform.

The Ruger has the old chamber and will limit you to what ammo it can run. The Stags have the good chamber(SPCII) and great reviews.

I'd take a look at ARP, Bison and Wilson Combat, all of those guys will set you up right.

I would assemble one and put it on a Cav II lower if you can find one and swap out the trigger to a timmy competition trigger.

Light weight upper Receiver

Bison ultralight 16" barrel if they still make one.

Bison Bolt

DPMS carrier

Clarks carbon fiber foregrip. Super light but if you want to go the normal route I like the magpul grips.

Quad rail gas block.

Rest of the usual parts.

The trigger will probably put you over $1000 but its worth it IMO.
There are other good triggers out there too, but this one is the best I have used on an AR so far.
I got mine with my lower.

AR15performance.com has really good barrels and their own design (beafier lugs and stronger steel) bolts. They sell components, assembled uppers or complete rifles. Ben at Bison, Wilson Combat and others make good products also. If you want to do research, go to 68forums.com

Don't get the Ruger!! It has the old outdated specs! I think they are left overs.
I'd get the Stag out of the choices you mentioned. They have the correct specs.
ARP is prepping for the move. So no rifle at this time.

Do you have a lower?

Ruger is okay, but not that accurate.

When I first got our 6.8 mini, it shot

Shot 1 - 7" low left
2 - 4-5" low left
3 - 2" low left
4 - about zero but 2" groups
5 - about the same

and with a cold barrel that was repeatable.
I probably wasted 100-150 rounds trying to figure out what was wrong with it.

Sent it back to the factory and it came back shooting pretty about 1" groups.
They changed the barrel, bolt and something else I cant remember.

The BSP is for subsonic use, BSP = Bison Subsonic Platform

I would go with Bison or ARP

Can you ream a 6.8 spc out to the new SPC II specs?

TX, Yeah, it's really quick and easy to do. Just have to find a reamer. Check on 68forums.

I only have experience with the AR Performance, but it is a tack driver. Great upper. I built the lower from a S&W receiver.
