Question- XM-177/ CAR-15 carry by MACV-SOG
From pix, noted that many SOG soldiers carried their CAR-15's using a OD rope (?) attached to front sight base and top rear of two position CAR stock.
––-Anyone know what type rope this is?––-
Thank you for any feedback.
Paracord??
they probably used just about everything..paracord, rope, regular sling, some other type of straps..
Appreciate the responses..
Its not 550 cord. Its thicker.
I've seen it before. Just cant place it.
I seem to remember reading in a SOG book they used bungee cord like the M60 door gunners used to hang the M60's from.
It's just the standard green USGI rope. Same stuff you see them carrying in bundles. Search for GI rappel rope or something similar.

Rappelling rope? Braided 550 cord? Hell, I've seen pics of surgical tubing being used. I prefer the GP strap with 550 cord end myself.

+1 - found the "field expedient sling" thread awhile back and ordered 5 pack of GP cotton strap and extra paracord... now gotta build 4 more carbines to use em up

Yep,,that's pretty much how it goes.
The OD triangular cravats were used too.
I use the seat belt sling on my XM177E2 Clone
attaching it to the FSB with 550 para cord.
I copied the style from a friend who's
a MACV-SOG Vet.
He said though utilitarian, in heavy engagements the
para cord would burn off due to the excessive heat.

The FSB would get that hot? WOW. I've seen some guys tie it directly to the barrel between the sight legs, which never seemed too bright to me, but the FSB seemed like it'd never get THAT hot! I doubt it will ever get that hot during one of MY engagements. but my first fiancee was a redhead, Irish and Italian, so anything is possible...

I've had mine melt. It's not the FSB that gets that hot, it's the loose paracord dangling down on the barrel.
Now that makes sense to me.
Cord, rope, just used what was on hand.

This is what cracks me up about the whole 'gotta have this because Team 6 carries it' thing. It's like guitars - a great guitarist can make a plywood box sound good. Likewise, the real badasses I've met use whatever they happen to have on hand. Knowledge is power, and requires no batteries.

That's why I never bought into the whole M4 w/accesories crazy.
I like my carbines clean and light.

Hence the retro forum, where we miserable geezers come to share..
2nd pic from the REAL DEAL pic thread thats stickied..many more pics in there..
It just came to me-
The rope that I was thinking about is tent guy rope or antenna rope/ line- used for putting up the long ground antenna (?) or the rope/ line that holds the long whip antenna down on a jeep or track so that it doesnt hit electric lines (as in crossing RR tracks in Germany) or vegetation etc.
120ft rappel rope is too thick and the paracord would eventually melt.

I have even used bootlaces as expedient slings in the past.

Quite a few members here from around that region. Sandblaster, elcope, and RoverG79 and some others have all worked El Sal or with Salvadorans.
