ATK awarded $2,541,000,000. for new 5.56 ammo
more than one, though the 30mm is a drop in the bucket relatively speaking
We are paying for the ammo they are going to use to kill us.
ATK's web site says that Lake City has produced more than 10 billion rounds of ammunition (all calibers) since 2000. That makes this new contract a whopper. I don't know what the contract cost is for 5.56 ammo but this one contract must be in the 10 billion round ballpark all by itself.

At 30 cents a round assuming its m855. That's about 8.47 billion rounds of ammo. That should hold them over for a while.

Who got the body bag order?
(use the thicker HD tinfoil)

My contacts and I in the MIC were joking about the irony over cigars and scotch last night.

You'd be surpised. At 01/02/03 usage levels that would be about 8 and a half years of training ammo for the Army only. That's not counting training for the other branches, combat operations, ect.
Bring back the 1873 Springfields!
I knew those infernal gimcrack autoloading machines would just let troops waste precious ammunition!

Don't worry - we'll be safe once we're in the FEMA camps.

I've not read the article but I highly doubt their cost is 30 cents a round..... at those prices probably like 6 cents.
Greedy bastards didn't even offer us a group buy.
Actually they only got $122,601,783 for 5.56 ammo. They got another 68 million for the 30mm HE. At .28 cents each per 5.56 round (total guess), you are only looking at 437 million rounds

Just checked out the link and it was corrected today, it was a typo. Not $2,541,000,000 but only $122,601,783. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the correction.
Good. I work at a contractor that makes cold weather gear for the .mil.
We've been laying off left and right. Looks like a ghost town. Most our sewing crew only works 4 days now.
It's a non-profit because we employ people with disabilities, and I oversee some of the lowest functioning people in the building (up to 1200 people working here when things are in full swing. I look after about 20.). Because of my duties my job is pretty safe, but even my guys have been working on reduced hours.
We could use some contracts, too. It's nice to see money flowing again. Hopefully some will come our way. We can't let the guys burning all that ammo get cold, you know!

I think we are in the territory of an Ammo Castle. Maybe even an entire Fiefdom of ammo.

Good catch, thanks.

Peckham?
For FY12 the US military pays $.40 a round for AO59 Ctg, 5.56mm Ball M855 10/Clip; $.56 a round for AA53 Ctg, 5.56mm Ball Special Match LR MK 262 Mod 0; $.57 a round for AB49 Ctg, 5.56mm Ball MK318 MOD 0; $.68 a round for AB57 Ctg, 5.56mm M855A1 EPR.

No more surplus ammo for us.

Yes. I sure hope the loosening of the purse strings bode well for us.

And get your kids ready with the Thomas the Train FEMA Camp Edition.
To keep on topic, I'm sure they use plenty for training purposes already. You never know.

We have not been able to purchase surplus ammo (with some exceptions through the CMP) for years/decades. IIRC it was clinton who signed that executive order back in the 90's, cause we can't be trusted with the ammo we bought. I'll be glad to reload the bullets, powder, and cases though that get sold through various venders.
At the bottom of the link:
CORRECTION: April 3, 2012 –– Due to a processing error in the Army’s automated reporting system, the award amount for contract W52P1J-09-D-0027, awarded to Alliant Techsystems Operations, L.L.C., is corrected from $2,541,000,000 to $122,601,783.

I thought the military kept ammo for ever. I've read guys saying that they were issued linked 50bmg in Iraq that was manufactured in the 1950's.
Wow!

Anyone want to venture a guess as to which company benefitted the most from Clinton's surplus ban and his ban in Chinese ammo?
