Ok relatively new guy that had not paid attention to ammo prices for very long. Looking for opinions from those that have been around a long time. Are ammo prices in a continual climb with maybe a few small dips or have prices ever significantly fallen historically?
I know the election cycle certainly has had an effect but are those temporary anomalies or have prices fallen back to prior levels historically?
How many of you look at ammo as a legitimate "Investment" from a financial perspective? And of course its always nice that that investment can be used for other purposes and enjoyment.
Found this old Archived thread:
Ammo Price Trends (Historical Charts) Updated 3/14/2008
Is there anything like this that is current?
Here is another example of propaganda I have seen: Opinions: Legit or Sales pitch?
Sales pitch. Notice how the unemployment rate "Rose from 8.6% to 4.1%"
Prices have increased but no more than inflation I doubt. That being said I cleaned up on selling .45 components that I bought in late 2007 and sold last year. I sold my 1911 and don't need them so I bought an ACOG with the proceeds. I basically doubled my money.
OMG look at this investment strategy (insert cherry picked years) see how it gained eleventy biliion percent!!!!!
If you look at the thread with the 80's ammo prices you will find that some were paying MORE for ammo in the 80s than we are now (factored for inflation)
Now if you look at the cost of ammo from the 90s early 2k and compare it to today, holy shit is was cheap and everyone had stacks of it.
It's all cyclical, stack it deep when its cheap for the tough times.
Ammo hasn't been that bad until recently, when the reatrds started with their maxed out cards and I hope they got raped.
Ammo is an investment like wine is an investment. I know I need to shoot something so I buy it when you can and sit on it.

This is what I was wondering. I just haven't been really paying attention long enough to know. For the time I have really been paying attention it seems like Presidential elections and other events drive up the prices and then they never really drop fully back down.
So there have been times when ammo prices have lowered significantly and stayed lower? Anyone care to share their memory of what type of events drove that?
Personally I agree with the wine comment. That has been my outlook. The question was prompted by the fact I don't remember a true and lasting decrease. But as I said I haven't been around that long.
