ACOG TA44 vs TA45
It's a dilemma: TA44 has a generous FOV of 7.4 degrees and good ER of 2.4", while TA45 has an incredible 3.6" of ER but a mediocre FOV of 4.9 degrees, a little worse than say TA11.
Seems to me FOV is more important than extra ER. What I find puzzling is why TA45, having a larger objective of 24mm vs 16mm and identical 1.5x power has worse FOV.
They say TA44 is the fastest ACOG available and comparable to RDS.
I seriously considered an Eotech but want to stay with ACOG and narrowed it down to TA44 and TA45. Thought about TA33 but it has an acceptably poor FOV compared to these subcompacts.
I went with the TA45.
The eye relief is more important to me than FOV, but I am a low speed, high drag operator.
The stated eye relief for the TA44 is not a good indicator; at least not for me. You should look at one to see for yourself. I can comfortably look through mine at 6 or 7" back and be fine. I haven't tried the TA45.
Wouldn't all things being equal, a larger objective is better? Brighter given better light-gathering capabilities.
I think I like 24mm more 16mm.
Not so much in the lower magnification ACOG's. You tend to look through them more than than you look into them for faster action shooting (more like a red dot sight instead of a scope).

How do you feel about the limited reticle choices on the 44?
I like the circle/dot reticle. I've had a TA44S-10 in amber and now have a TA44SR-10 in red. I prefer the red. For the record, I've owned many ACOG's through the years. I currently have 4; a TA44SR-10, TA33G-H, TA33R-8, and TA31DOC. Yes, I'm an ACOG fan. The 4x32's are my least favorite (the DOC is on the wife's gun & she loves it). IMO, the TA33's are the most versatile. I've also owned two micro T-1's and ended up trading both of them for ACOGs. The 1.5x's to me are similar but superior to red dot sights; brighter & clearer glass and the magnification is no obstacle (for me); it's there when you want it and not a factor when you don't.
I understand that the greater the eye relief, the easier it's to pick up and the faster and the more flexible you are in terms of where you have the cheekweld on the stock. TA11 and TA33 have good ER but apparently cannot compare to the compact 1.5x ACOGs that have understated ER.
The TA11 and TA33's are totally different tools than the TA44. The only things in common are the ACOG toughness, tritium/fiber optics, nice bright glass, and BAC........okay they do have a few things in common.
TA11 and TA33 are fantastic at what they do and so is the TA44, but they're for different applications.
I think you're getting too caught up in the numbers on paper. You really need to spend some time with some different ACOGs.
I decided to get a TA44 to replace an Aimpoint on one of my ARs. I
wanted an optic that didn't require batteries and gave me a little
magnification without really sacrificing speed. The TA44 fit the bit and
as an added bonus, it's incredibly light weight (around the same as a
T-1). I looked at all the Trijicon 1.5x and 2X optics and felt the TA44 was the best choice for me because of its features (weight and reticule options). BTW, I really like the circle/dot reticule.
When I bought another AR, I needed something in between the TA44 and the
Accupoint 3x9 so I opted for the TA33. It's got adequete eye relief,
adequete magnification and the weight is neglibile. I do OK with BAC but
having a front lens cap on the TA33 helps a lot. I looked at the TA11
but decided I was willing to sacrifice a larger FOV for less weight.
All in all, my ARs have the following optics:
- Aimpoint T-1
- TA44 1.5X
- TA33 3X
- Accupoint 3-9X
- A spare Aimpoint M3 should I need it.
I have tried using a magnifier (Aimpoint) with a red dot and learned it wasn't for me (too heavy and too complicated).
My only experience is with TA11, until I realized I wanted a lower power and something faster. TA11 is one size fits all or one size fits none.
So now it seems a 1.5x ACOG is just the ticket. I also looked at the TA33 specs and they look very good. Am I correct in assuming that TA33 is somewhere in between TA11 and TA44 in terms of speed? Does TA33 have any disadvantages over TA44 other than the more narrow FOV?
