 Looking for an SPR optic

I'm in the process of building an ar15 SPR type setup. I'm running a 20" barrel. I want to be able to hit smaller targets ( rabbits, coyotes, milk jugs etc) out at 400 yards. I don't want to spend over $400. I don't need anything really expensive, but I want something that offers a mil dot reticule if possible. And I want something that offers 10 or 12x zoom capabilities.

The leupold mark AR 4-12x looks like something to consider. It offers a mil dot reticule, but from what I've been able to gather, I'm unsure if the windage and elevation adjustment knobs correspond to the mil dot sight picture. I've only been able to find info on BDC type setups. Is it a true mil dot scope?

Help me if I am confused please.

Honestly keep your eye in the EE and the sniperhides optics for sale,. A nice leupold vx 3 can be had for around 400 used. A 3.5-10. 4-12 would be nice!

Agree. they are nice.. But the only think I'm not in love with is the sight pictures they offer. I'm not a fan of BDC reticules.

What about something like THIS?

Vx-3s are available in duplex only. Heck my mark 4 on my 700p is a duplex only. Seriously keep an eye out you can get some really great glass for good deals!

Weaver makes some ok glass, they not made in the us anymore which is unfortunate, but I believe they still have a great warranty!

The Weaver Kaspa series is made in china, stay away. But the Weaver Grand Slam series is made in Japan.

This Weaver is the one you want. You will not find a nicer scope in your price range, period. I have three. They will go on sale for $299 and they are only available at Midway.

The optic you suggested doesn't have a parallax adjustment.. How is the clarity and focus with the scope at all magnifications? I would imagine you know because you have a few.

And the specs state that the focal plane is the "2nd" which means rear or front focal plane? If its a rear focal plane, what magnification setting is needed to properly use the turret adjustments?

The glass is very very good in it at all power ranges. Just as good if not better than the leupolds you are looking at. Look around the web and you'll find a lot of positive reviews about it. With a 10x optic a parallax adjustment is not necessary. I have used it out to 675 yards with a 308 bolt gun on a 16"x9" shilouette and I've also shot coke cans at 400 yards with it on my SPR. It really is a great little scope.

It is a 2nd focal plane scope. So ranging and holdovers will only be accurate at 10x without doing math. Your turret adjustments will still work on any power the scope is set on. The only complaint I have with it is the gen 1 type mildot. If it came with a gen 2 mildot that had hash marks at each half mil it would be awesome.

Another plus is it is mil/mil. So your reticle and turrets match unlike the leupolds.

Hope this helps.

Amazon has the weaver for 307. Maybe its a different scope from the one on midway.

That is the "hunting version" of the same scope. Plex reticle and covered turrets but same glass.
