I'm stuck on which optic to save up for. Primary use would be sub 300 yards on torso targets and the occasional wolf. I would like to stay in the 1-4 power range (yes, I know the patrol is 1.25)

Which would you choose and why?

Edit: Or at this point should I just save up $200 more and get a mini acog?

Leupold for the fire dot, and the fact it's made in the USA!

Have no qualms with the Vortex brand, and have a few of thier products, but i just got my VX-R patrol and I like it a lot. Well worth the cost.

It is just so clear. The quality of the glass far surpasses the quality of my Vortex 3-12 scope.

Any other opinions on the 2?

I would buy the made in America optic. I learned this lesson the hard way.

I have seen both and both appear good quality, well made scopes. I went for the VX-R because I prefer the SPR reticle with illuminated dot. I shoot Service rifle out to 500yards with it, and find that the reticle will allow me to do that, and the dot is good for the shorter range stuff inside 100 yards.

This! I mounted it on my 308 and was hitting plates out to 600yards with no problem. I am considering putting one on all my rifles I love it so much.

Do these VX-R have reset-to-zero turrets?

Also can anyone comment how they like the push button illumination? Is it a metal button? Or is it a rubber-like material, like on the EoTechs?

Thanks.

the vx-r has the return to zero turrets as long as you set them(they do not have the snap in buttons found on the mk8's, and mk 6). The dot button is very eay to use, it may be rubber, but it has a hard plastic center. Very intuitive.

So I assume the reset-to-zero turrets require the user to loosen the set screws? I am okay with that!
And on the button, it's more like a tactical flashlight tail cap? LIke a sure fire (rubber coated hard plastic?).

Do you own this scope?

To answer your questions

Yes loosen the set screws and align for zero.

Like a flashlight button, but no clicky click. More Hard plastic than soft rubber.

And Yes I own a vxr patrol.

I have the Leupy 1.25-4 VX-R Firedot 4 and the Vortex HS 1-4 Viper PST

-I would give the glass edge to Vortex as well as the mechanicals, and rheostat type illumination control (personal preferance)

-I would give the weight, and reticle to the Leupy (again personal preference)

They are both well built and I would be hard pressed to choose one over the other.

I live about 50 miles from Vortex so for me any warranty issues is a drive into Middleton drop off scope go to Costco go to lunch pick up repaired scope or get issued a brand new one and be home before 2:30PM so thats my bias in the warranty dept.

Of course the new Leupy 1-6X 24 VX-R and Vortex Razor 1-6X24 might be worth a look when they come out
