Mount Riser on the cheap
Hi all, I've spent my allotted hour trying to find posts that have covered this, I'm sure this discussion has already happened at some point, but I'm getting blurry eyed trying to find it and this topic can be quickly and easily dealt with if someone would like to give me a little advice.
I have a Noveske N6 (Armalite AR10 based in 308, fluted) carbine. I am NOT RICH, and I saved and searched for literally *years* before purchasing this rifle (hunting whitetail, hogs, survival and a SHTF zombie combat rifle all in one type deal). I use other weapons for home defense, and cannot afford high end optics at this time. I have my Troy Battle BUIS that came with the rifle from Noveske, and a 3x9x40 Nikon ProStaff mounted on a one piece Armalite 1" ring standard height mount (it has the same apx. sight height as the iron sights), it cost $85, the scope cost $170. Right now my focus is purchasing more ammo, not spending a lot on accessories.
With that in mind, I regret not choosing more wisely what mount I bought... because I should have gotten about a .75" higher mount. I can use this set up okay, but the "head scrunch" is not very ergonomic, and I'm at the limit of how high the buttstock has to ride up on my shoulder. Now I'm faced with the choice of buying a .75" riser, or buying a new mount for the scope that has that amount of rise built in.
So the short question is are these Tapco and other low end, but quite simple, riser mounts available for under $20 reliable and not a waste of money?
Or should I just consider getting another one piece mount to replace this Armalite a better idea?
If I get a riser, I would prefer one that does not end up giving me two more oversized thumb knobs sticking out, rather I would like a flush mounted screw type mounting hardware. Or, a quick release lever type. But I know going "cheap" on the lever type is not wise.
Any and all advice will be very appreicated. Also, I hope some mercy can be had towards me, I know this is not exactly a very interesting topic for someone who is discussing $3k optics or their "next build"... but maybe a desire to help someone out will prevail... at least I have good taste in rifles and spend my money wisely? ;0)
take a look at the RRA = Rock River Arms mounts. Regular and cantilever mounts. US Made!
they place the scope higher than Armalite mounts.
no need to worry on optics costs. LOL I use plenty of Nikon Prostaffs with good results. I think the best buy were the old Primos 3-9 built off of older Monarch series at $169.00. great glass, great tracking!
RRA sit to high for my hold on varmint rigs. probably perfect for you if the Armalite is to low.
maybe someone with skill will hot link a pic for ya. good affordable USA made mount
PK at the top has them for $50.00 regular $60.00 Cantilever under scope mounts, then click others and you'll see pic's.
You should be able to sell your Armalite mount quickly to cover costs on the RRA
if ya want shoot me an IM. I have a hi mount you can have for free. I reckon it's about the RRA height. to high for me

at least you'll know before droppin $$$$$$$$ on another mount. I'll never use it.

I have quite a few DNZ freedom reaper mounts. There nice low mounts like the Armalite. I'm sure they'd mount the scope to low for the OP. He's wanting a high mount. RRA places the scope the highest of the mounts I know. There to high for me, or possibly most shooters with a hard cheek weld.
I don't know what the height of this mount is, but it sure looks mighty damn fine. It's the
Vortex Cantilever Mount.
This page lists the best prices I have found on this mount.
I've never had a problem with any LaRue mount. They height and eye relief is always perfect.
The Rock River mounts are seriously heavy, mine weighs 10.6 ounces. Strong you probably could run a tank over it.
But other offset mounts weigh up to half that amount. I bought a TMS mount on ebay ($28.80) that weighs 4.6 ounces and really like on both my 5.56 and 6.8 uppers. Very solid.
Quite frankly if you are looking for just a riser the UTG ones have served me well and they only cost 9 bucks. If you don't want to go that route YHM has a better rep and they have smaller knobs or allen bolts, a little but more $ but you could just get a smaller riser for each ring.
