I've narrowed it down to the Leupold VX-R series, but i cant decide between the 1.25-4x or the 3-9x. I plan on using it for hog hunting and varmint mainly. 300 yard shots would be the upper limit, with most of my shooting between 100 and 200 yards. I like how much smaller the 1.25-4x is, but is that going to be enough magnification to shoot accurately enough to down a hog at 300 yards if needed to?
FWIW, I have no problems hitting 12" steel gongs at 300 meters with a 1-4x AccuPoint. It has plenty of reach, and I'm confident that a better shooter could do much better than I can.
The 1-4x flavor of optics is fast becoming my favorite-the versatility is just fantastic

My 22-year-old Leupold 3-9x40 Vari-X II doesn't get a whole lot of use these days, mainly because my 1-4x scope is just so damned useful.
Either way you will be getting a nice scope-those two Leupolds you are considering are both excellent for the money.
