 Magnifiers for red dots.

Probably a stupid question, but if you put a 3x magnifier on a 4 moa red dot wouldn't it look like a 12 moa.
Could someone explain how it works.

Nope. 4 moa is 4 moa regardless of magnification or range. The target will appear 3x larger and the dot will still cover 4 inches of target at 100 yards. It will only look larger in the scope because the target looks larger.

Yep, the target will stay the same size and the dot will get 3x bigger.

Not.

I wanted to make sure which direction to go, wether to look at the riflescopes or a red dot and magnifier.

what are your intentions for the rifle?

A 4 MOA red dot with magnifier will cover a 8 inch target at 200 yards and 12 inches at 300 yards..

Go with the rifle scope, lower cost, more effective. RDS and a 3x are bandaids for a quailty 1-4x scope.

A 3x magnifier will magnify EVERYTHING you see by 3x. Your dot will be magnified and so will the target.

Sure glad that a new guy can ask a legit question and people like 14point5 can prove to the internet what a D-Bag he is. I did not know the answer to this question either and I run carbines a shit ton.

Thanks,
Ghilly

No problem. Technically TDunn answered your question accurately first. TDunn and I worded our responses a bit differently.

couldn't say it better myself, just get a 1-4 or 1-6 scope,,, unless you are using the red dot / eotech for home defense, hunting fast moving pigs, run and gun, or stuck in the middle of a war.... if used for 90% target practice, then don't waste your time with a red dot / eotech with magnifier. IMO

hunting fast moving pigs, run and gun, etc, all be done just as fast with the scope set at 1x.

the true 1-4x and 1-6x scopes are much better at longer ranges and equally as good up close as any rds w/ 3x mag. And Cost less.

I have a couple of Aimpoints (no magnifiers) and a Mk4 1.5-5x scope with an illuminated reticle.
IMO the Aimpoints have their uses, but the scope is far better overall.
