I am getting a laser to put on my AR hog rig. Whats the orientation to install the laser? I see most people have it on top. I think my accupoint woould clear it, but is there an advantage to the 12 oclock position vs the other positions? I am looking for not only functionality but looks pleasing too.
If your optic clears it, put it at 12 because it will.help the laser with the lasering and the whargarrrblll.
Just put it where its comfortable to you and test it out. Run it in a few different varitations and see what you like best. IAMOPP.
It is nice to have it inline with the bore as it is easier to line it up, but you could have it on either side. The beam will just be offset from the boresight some until it converges.
I have mine on the top rail and the laser set on my Eotech Center Dot reticle @ 200 yards, it will be off (down slightly) some at closer range like 50 yards, but most of my night kills are at 150-200 yards.

Depends on what laser - but generally 12 o'clock is preferred for an offset aiming laser - the offset is designed specifically for 12 o'clock mounting. Otherwise, you could get something like the ITAL. Anything with a built in illuminator will be offset however.
Top mounting of an offset aiming laser allows you to limit the laser's offset to the lateral range only, side mounting a similar laser would mean that you would have a vertical offset as well as a lateral offset. An in-line laser will avoid this.
Also, the top rail is the most protected location for the laser - while many modern aiming lasers are quite sturdy, they are still relative to other accessories, relatively delicate. It will also most likely be the most expensive piece of equipment "regularly" installed, even at equivelant "premium" levels.
The only reason I would mount an aiming laser anywhere other than the top rail would be to mount night vision or thermal accessories to the top rail.
This is all assuing a "PEQ" style laser unit like the DBAL-I2 or C1 OTAL, however. I'm not sure what unit you're planning to go with.

My DBAL-I2 needed virtually zero adjustment for either the IR or vis laser when I installed it on the top rail over the barrel, it was right on the money right from the factory.
