Surefire M952 Malkoff Replacement
I am looking for a LED replacement for my Surefire M952 weapon light. I like the Malkoff stuff but am having a hard time figuring out if it drops in or not. Most of the threads ive found on the subject are a few years old. Some talk about having to modify the collar while others talk about a ring that is needed.
This is going on my primary rifle and my biggest concern is reliabilty. If i need to i may just go with a P60L. Any help from you seasoned pros would be greatly appreciated!
I have a Malkoff but it does not fit my M951. However, some fit like the ones from
Bright Flashlights, you just have to tell them that it is for an M952 and they will make sure it drops in. I just need to order one and try out.

Excellent, I thought it was odd that people would modify the light instead of the bulb.
MALKOFF M60/M61 IN SUREFIRE M951
This is to show how to fit the Malkoff Devices M60 drop in LED to the Surefire M951 series weapon lights.
Take a wee bit of work but is well worth it once done.
The issue at hand is the angle of the drop-in when it goes to fit into the adaptor. A few parts will be referred to here:
Bezel – this is the part with the lens where the lamp goes into
Lamp Assembly – this is the original incandescent lamp (bulb that was in the light)
Drop in LED – obviously this is your Malkoff Devices M60/M61 LED
Adaptor – not sure of the official name, but this is the threaded collar that goes between the main MH90 housing and the bezel. Its primary purpose is to allow for shock isolation for the batteries.
So on to the mods.
Here is the M60 LED – you can see how short the contact spring is at the back – this is an issue that you have to deal with.
I added on an extra big spring that I had in my parts bin. This is to allow for contact with the battery post when the M60 is in the collar.
Here is the inside of the adaptor – this shows the little black plastic insert. I needed to remove it to allow for a closer fit
I also used a spring from a dead P60 bulb – they are soldered on but forcing them off works – use this also to get proper contact
Here is the M60 sitting in the adaptor and the spring below the M60
Installed into the light
Hope this helps

Is that required when you order from Bright Flashlights? From reading at the link above it appears that they make the modifications before sending it out.
Looks like the unit from Bright Flashlights does not require any altering of the light. Thanks for the replies!
I ordered 2 M61s from Kevin at Bright lights today for my M951 and M952. He was modding them for me before he ships tomorrow. Great service and a good price too.
Is it Ok to run them for long periods of time? I think I can remember someone saying you could not run the light with Malkoff M61 260 lumen LED for more than a few minutes.
Thanks

If you have the M61 in a 6P/9P or other metal light, it can be run continuously (per the Malkoff website). However I have heard some mentions (online) that there are some heat transfer issues w/ the M951/2 and that it should not be left on continuously in that light.

That is my understanding also.

Does the same apply to the M60? I'm bout to put one in my 951 and I had not heard that. Whats the reason for the issue?
I just received my unit from Bright Flashlights and it appears that they simply stretched the spring on the Malkoff unit. I dropped mine into my 951 and it works great. I have some questions however. The OP used the larger spring from a dead P60 lamp. I can see how it will help isolate the unit from shock, but is it necessary? Additionally should the plastic ring be removed in order to ensure a better contact? I love the additional lumens, but I also need this to be dead nuts reliable. Many seem to think that simply stretching the spring is all you need to do, but is the really the best method?

its not needed, here is what brightflash lights did for my light.....
tell brightflashlights what its for, they will stretch the contact spring and then its just a drop in, super simple

not needed, recoil wont affect the bulb, its a very tight fit and in the M951 the shock isolating bezel makes it not need any extra springs, and the black plastic insert is there more to affect the batteries.
if the guys at brightflashlights say its good its good, i talked to the guys at Malkoff about this and they recommend me to them saying they know best about how the bulbs fit in each diff type of flashlight
ETA: the only issues i have heard of with the malkoff lights is in polymer flashlights since the heat can melt and warp the polymer on a metal one it should be ok
