First attempt at making a 9mm AR barrel under the supervision of a master machinist. Used a Birmingham lathe.

Smoothbore 9mm? That's a strange shotgun...

I have always wondered how rifling was done. I understand with hammer forged that the rifling is from the mandrel. How did you do it after milling the barrel?

my bet is on a turned blank too otherwise he would have mentioned deep hole bore or button rifle press or some other fangled mamber jamber besides lathe
still sweet

Can get all the pipes you need from home depot, without rifling, thats all it is. lol. It is a fancy pipe but one none the less.

Nice job!
I have been doing some reading on the process of the AR barrel.
I have done a few bolt action barrels and found this to be a little different process but doable.
I hope to try sometime soon.

Thanks. It was a piece of stainless rifled barrel blank. I contoured it to fit the AR upper, flange for the barrel nut, cut to length, chambered/ head spaced it, crowned it, sand blasted, and installed it. He threaded it as he needed to show me how to do it. On my own for the next one. It was fun. gonna do a 633 contour next.

Nice. Did you use a pre-made barrel extension or is it machined as a one piece assembly? Barrel locating pin?

Now dress it up with some homemade flutes. You do own a Dremel tool, right?

Probably machined as one piece and no need for a index pin on a 9mm barrel unless you pin a front sight on
and want it to be at 12:00

OK. Stupid question of the day time.
What about the locking lugs? Or is the 9mm a blow back design and don't use them?

No lugs and blow back is another reason no 12:00 index pin is needed, unless
you build a DI gas 9mm then you will have lugs and a index pin is needed.
