Anyone here still building these 80% lowers? If so, who's lower are you guys using nowadays? Ive been away from the AR scene for a while. I still have afew and was curious if its worth the headache, over a new stripped lower.

stripped 100% is the way to go....easy resale and a hell of alot cheaper too.

80% receivers are for the curious, technically inclined people that just want to know if they can do it. Other than that,it's for the under the radar or can't pass a background check people.

BS ^

Try Tactical Machining for your less than 100% lower needs. They are an absolute blast to do and you learn something along the way.

not as long as people make their own beer and wine to avoid excise tax.

If you can't pass a background check and want to build a rifle, doubt that would be the only thing they could get you on if they really wanted to.

Just saying.

if they can't pass a background check they already did something to lose their freedom and hence probably don't care.

Some of us choose 80% lowers to customize a build along with the satifaction of doing it.John Braceman,a member here, engraves lowers with custom roll marks,or retro repro roll marks.Pricey?Yes.But I feel its worth it.Its hard not to resent the idiots that use the avoidance of background checks as the reason we do this,

This is why I'm doing mine, a good project to get my machining skills back up to par with. I have no need to avoid background checks, being military is enough to keep me in check and out of trouble.

I'm sure there are some out there that use the 80% lowers to skate under the radar, but I don't think there are very many of them, but like anything else involving firearms there are always a few that make the rest of us look bad.

Because you can do this. Who says you can't have fun with this hobby?

Seriously! Why build an 80% when you can just go to a gun show?

Seriously, some guys (myself included) like to build clone builds and it nice to have the correct markings on them. True, it does cost a bit more (like double once you add in anodizing and engraving costs) but for some of us it is worth the effort. For others it is not. It is a personal choice. I have AR's with store bought lowers and ones with my 80%'s and they shoot the same, but to be honest - I am more proud of the ones I machined myself.

I like the Mattel Logo, but I don't think I would want to put the "PROPERTY OF US GOVT" on my own lower. I mean I can tell it's a joke, but I would imagine there are some LEO's out there who would be a little dumb and think it was actually government property.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not bashing LEO's as a whole in any way, merely pointing out that there are several people in every group out there (US Navy included) that make the rest look bad.

There are way easier ways then buying a few hundred dollars worth of tools to build 80% lowers. I for one would be very interested seriously. And the can't pass a background crap is absolute crap...

I work in the court system and see so many men and women for that matter that get hit with BS protective orders and lose their rights for 2 years to life all because they can't either 1 afford an aottorney or 2 their ex made up some crap to keep them out of the house.

All it takes is a women in texas to walk down and file a protective order on her husband and say she feels threatened he can't come into his own property at that point for two years. But believe me she gets to leave there rent freakin free during that time frame while he has to find another alternative. I see it all the time with the pretty trophy wifes for sure. They find a new play toy and want their peace but don't have crap to fall back on and use the system to screw their soon to be ex over.

Because we want a lower we made ourselves and a selecter that is engraved "Safe" and "Fill Yer Hands!"

Honestly, when I told my wife about the 80%'s and the rules for them she asked hoiw much an end mill would cost. I am a lucky, lucky guy.

She also wants a water bench to play around with.

I was mocking the whole felons making guns thing by pointing out how it would be easier, according to the media, for felons to just exploit the "gun show loophole" - I agree making a gun up from an 80% would be awesome. I have a drill press and frequent cncguns.com. Someday I'll get a lower and a jig and give it a try.

Although most of my gunsmithing attempts thus far fall into the category of "expensive misadventure"

I finished mine this weekend. Aside from the fun of hanging out with my bro (his drill press), the satisfaction of being able to accomplish the building of my SHTF solution myself is unbeatable. Add to that the knowledge gained and the great feeling when I pulled the trigger and it went "bang" the first time....I guess I'm just a type A that loves building things.

I built the entire rifle around a Tactical Machining 80%. Must be popular as they can't keep 'em in stock. I'll probably go with Colfax Tactical for the next one.
