 Time for the "lightweight" AR10: 8lbs 3oz

I have been wanting to get into the lightweight AR10 for awhile now. I have a 16 AR10A4 with DD lite rail and a 18" A4 with SWS E1 rail that I really like but both have the mid weight barrels. I think the 18" handles better than the 16. (I really dislike the big gas block on the carbine models.

Anyway I saw that Rainier arms had a lightweight barrel and decided to throw it on a blem upper ans a 139 sale lower. It also has a BCM charging handle that i had to "modify" to get it to work. I had been hanging on to the Troy rail for awhile with this gun in mind.

So here it is. Plain right now but the Troys have been ordered as well as an ACS. It will get some color but I haven't decided what to do. I think a FDE gunkote base coat with OD and sage highlights will work nicely. Migth just rattle can it with some "Army green" and OD.

Get your hands on an Armmalite Ar10B and you will appreciate the balance and weight of a great rifle.

I never understood the idea behind making a "lightweight" AR-10, isnt that what the AR15 is for?

Are you wanting to stay free floated? I was gonna post something asking if those DCM float tubes would work on the AR-10. I was thinking that would save some weight if it could work. Then use the Magpul MOE handguards, and your set.

Carry it around for awhile and you will see.

I have a ton of the standard 15/10s and I built a LW 15 (my first) when I got back from AFG this summer. It shoots just as well as the other carbines but is so lite and it just feels nice and points very well. Transitioning with it is better IMO.

I will keep the HBs on the precision rigs and my F/A uppers but I cannot see a reason to not go LW on the rest of the rifles. Shooting small groups is fun, but I've decided to only have dedicated rifles for that. The rest will get the chop/diet.

I think the move will be to make LW uppers and shorter barrels for the AR platforms. See the SCAR and HK series and OOS for all sales on LW barrels. We are seeing some of it now as people understand that a LW barrel does not mean inaccurate. The wives tale of heating up and throwing shots all over the country side is highly exaggerated, just like a "short barrel is inaccurate". The people that get out and shoot with them know the story.

Besides all that, I wanted another 10

Anyway for a carry around rifle, lighter is better.

YMMV

how much would a "light weight" upper cost ....like a 16 inch gun... with out optics in the price?

cause it does suck carrying around the full size gun when your bearhunting and what not

Looks like you are off to a great start. I would like to know more about what was needed for the BCM charging handle as I was thinking about buying one for myself. For my full size AR10 of course. I also agree with your thoughs on the full size gas block. I think the railed gas blocks are kinda overkill for any rifle with a FF tube on it personally. I feel the irons are better suited to ride on the rail anyway on a FF setup. Less mass the barrel has on it during the dynamics of the firing process as well. I was noticing your setup has a standard M4 stock. If you were wanting another optin I think BCM is selling a knockoff SOPMOD for cheap...I know it isn't the real thing but the price seems right. After the holiday season winds down I am gonna buy one and see if it is worth the price of admission. I think the design would work well for a lightweight SPRish build which is what your lightweight is gonna end up being in a lot of ways...and I totally dig it for that...sans scope and bipod of course...

The ACC is looking good as well...I have never witnessed a supressed AR10...I can only imagine how nice it would be without all the noise and concussion...

Keep us informed and thanks for sharing

ETS: sorry...I misread about you had ordered the ACS...very nice part...Magpul makes good stuff...just don't see it much on AR10s...

TaylorWSO,

Pardon my ignorance, but is that an EOTech sight? What are the specs and what range is it good to?

It might look less tactical, but another thought for a lightweight AR10 is a standard A2 stock - longer, but less metal / no moving parts.

Thanks!

Its the EOT XPS.

I got it at lapolice gear last sale they had.

The FAQ has the drop tables for 147gr. I sight in at 45 yards. This will give me torso hits out to 300. If I need more precise than that then Im doing it wrong.
