Problems with Magpul PRS Stock on the A 10.
I have assembled a couple AR 15 rifles before. I am just about to finish building my A 10. While I was putting on the Magpul PRS Stock. I first put in the detent pin and then the spring. After putting on the stock I noticed that the take down pin would not stay in the open position. I removed the stock, took the spring out along with the pin. What I found out that the spring is not long enough. I stretched the spring and it worked ok. Do they make longer springs for this or did I do something wrong. I measured the spring and it is not long enough to push the detent pin to hold open the take down pin while removing your upper receiver. Any solutions to this problem
Speaking from firtst hand experience, I did not have any problem whatsoever changing out my factory Armalite A2 buttstock with my PRS stock. Is it that your spring isnt long enough? How about your detent is it the correct one? Maybe your takedown pin, does it have a well defined cut for your detent? Maybe check your detent and spring hole to insure it is drilled and burr free all the way through. Good luck and Merry Christmas.
I reread your post again. So say your spring is to short. A simple fix would be to get a dowel pin and cut it to length to make up the difference. Another possible fix

A 10 , do you mean AR10 ? ??
On the AR10's I have the take down pin detent and spring are held in place by the pistol grip.

On my AR10 the pistol grip retains the spring for the selector and the buttstock retains the spring for the rear takedown pin.

You know the funny thing is that when I was putting in the spring I noticed some threads on the receiver. I also had one allen head left over that came with my lower receiver. I thought if was an extra one. After looking at the link you posted I am sure that this is what that allen head is for. I try it this morning.
thanks
OP what does the roll mark say on this AR10. Post pics please
You either dont have a AR10 or they have changed the lower. Whatever the case, I would like to see it.
I literally just replaced an A2 stock with a PRS on my Armalite AR10 and did not have to deal with any detent pins/springs what-so-ever.
Very easy swap.
I took two pictures but I don't know how to post them. I have an A2 stock and I took if off of my other AR. I looked at the spring and the detent. The same as on my AR10. There are some threads where the detent spring goes into. I am not sure but this may take a allen head screw to push the spring down further to make it work. For now I just added another spring and it works fine. My lower receiver is made by Tactical Machining Deland FL USA. The only other thing that I can think that is wrong is maybe the spring is too small.
Easiest way to post pics is to use a site like Photobucket.
Upload your photos and there is an image URL that you can literally copy and paste into your post - the pictures should show up.
As I said earlier When I took the A2 stock off of my other AR 15 I noticed that the detent spring and the detent were the same size as the one in the A10 that I am building. I added two springs and it seems to work fine. There looked to be some threads where I applied the two springs. It looks like it could take a allen head screw. I am sure that this lower receiver is up to specs. The only problem that I could think is that the spring is to small. This is the first time for me building A10, not much different than building the AR 15.
Thats not a current AR10, hence the problems
blackthorne or a old style ar10

Me too, but he said he had an A 10 and I am wondering where you put a PRS on a Wart Hog?
BTW, next time I go shooting, I am going to experiment with going back to an A2 stock and getting rid of my PRS on 2 AR10s and 1 M15.
I find the PRS not to be very good when shooting using a bag in the rear. That's the way I shoot most of the time and the use of a monopod on the PRS to me isn't practical.

Could it be a DPMS, thus not an AR10?

Quite probable. Definitely does not look anything like the AR10 receiver that I have.
DPMS platform base for sure

AR-10s are made by Armalite, Noveske, and Aero Precision. That is an LR-308 pattern gun. They are not the same thing, at all. The AR-10 uses the pistol grip to hold in the takedown pin detent and spring. You should contact Tactical Machining since they're the ones that made your receiver.
Ya I was planning on giving them a call in the morning.
thanks
Also, that threaded portion of the hole takes a 4-40 set screw. Try putting one in there and tightening it down until you get the tension you need.

No, it is NOT.
Well I called Tactical Machining this morning and they told me that those are threads for a allen head screw to go into to push the spring down on the detent. I was shorted a allen head screw when I got my receiver. Problem solved.

Using a set screw for the release pin detent is a very common AR mod, It certainly makes swapping stocks a piece of cake.
