 Removal of AR10 flashhider

Attempting to remove what I assume is the factory flashhider from an AR10A4 infantry carbine barrel.

Need to install an AAC Brakeout.

This flash-hider does not want to come off.

Is there some secret sauce trick?

I have a barrel vice, flash - hider wrench, breaker bar, etc... but putting pressure in the std right tight / left loose is not doing a damn thing but twisting the barrel in the barrel vise.

Any thoughts?

It's not pinned or welded is it? Verify that first. If not, you could apply some heat to help loosen it.

I would assume is not welded or pinned, did Armalite do that on 16" barreled guns?

This is a flash-hider, not a comp, so I wouldn't think that was done.

I have it soaked in PB Blaster, will let dry out a bit then maybe hit it with some heat...

I had the same problem a few months ago (if you can get into the Archives). Basically I used heat, wrench and Wintergreen oil to try and loosen mine. I ended up cutting the FH in half using a dremel and cold chisel being very careful not to damage the end of the barrel. I guess you could always send in in to Armalite. Once apart it leaked out all the Wintergreen Oil that some form of white gunk on the threads had stopped. The original FH was properly indexed with no crush washer, but the Vortex I put on would not index.

Heat did the trick.

It looks like there may have been some red loctite on there.... hard to tell.

Anyway, heated it up until the PB blaster smoked off, no discoloration of the barrel or flash hider, put the wrench on, off it came.

Try putting some KROIL on the flash hidder for a few days and then try it. Slop it one wet it down. It really helps loosen it up.

There's no need to index a Vortex. Just thread it on and shoot...

The Vortex also only gets torqued to like 10 pound feet of torque
