Hey guys i will be leaving for basic in January and then tech school for 8 months so i was wondering if i need to use a certain type of lube like Break-free collectors to put on there. Also is there something to run a swab through the barrel to keep it from rusting? Oh and its a spikes lower a PSA upper, chrome lined 1-7 twist

CLP will protect the barrel just fine, just swab some in there.

If you are storing your rifle in a safe/case/etc/....throwing in a dessicant pack is a good idea.

EIG Universal Greasehttp://sport.birchwoodcasey.com/RIG/RIGDetails.aspx?ProductID=16e7ebdf-50bd-42ee-ae2c-6ddb3e1a983b will keep the rust off for a long time.

CLP is good for both cleaning, lubrication, and preventing rust (hence the letters in the name), but yeah, when you get back you could break it all down and re-lube everything with your favorite oil of choice.

For longer term storage, machine gun grease is really good stuff because it tends to stay where you put it.

LaRue sells some very good stuff.

There are many areas where I pinch pennies in life, and maintaining the weapons that I trust my life to is NOT one of them.

I'm not knocking anyone else's choices, but IMHO, it is penny wise but pound foolish to try and save $5 trying to maintain a build that costs $1000 and to which I may trust my life someday.

I dont' want to get into a technical discussion about the smoke point of vasoline and all that stuff, my point is simply that the only products I use on my weapons are products designed for weapons, and have been tested through use by others (and often myself).

To each his own, but if the cost is not a deterrent, I believe a purpose-built solution is ideal.

he is looking for storage options because he is going to be away from the rifle for months, ie not fired. vasoiline will be fine for storage. this is not about what lube to use while firing, but for storage. cosmoline is nothing more than vasoline with added rust inhibotors to meet a gov spec. tw-25b while a great choice for using a firearm is not the best choice for long term storage.

I was gone for 15 months and I just wiped my rifles down with CLP prior to leaving. Although, I live in a pretty dry climate so YMMV.

CLP is rather effective as a rust prevent esp when rifle is stored indoors.

i was told never to put anything other than hopes 9 or a purpose meant barrel solvent in there that is why i asked the question...also i live in a very humid climate where if i touch my 10/22 barrel it will start getting rust in a couple days

CLP as in break free CLP, it is a gun oil as you will find out. If it were me I would clp the rifle then use some rig grease on any metal extiror surface. Wearing gloves as your skin's acids can aslo promote rust. I know some guys that gun
rust stainless by touch alone.

eta dry patching a rifles bore is never a bad idea before shooting said rifle.

Ok, just wondering if it was a hard case. From what I've heard some of those closed-cell foam hard cases actually store moisture and can make you gun rust faster. Either way, one of those dessicant packs wouldn't be a bad idea.

Hell if you got the time see if you can get some VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) bags.

VCI example

may be able to find some non gun releated ones at places like MSC or McMaster for less.
