Frog lube and Otis kit
I just got my first ar and threw about 400 rounds of m855 through it. But stupid me i didn't get anything to clean it with i know it'll be fine for a bit before i need to really clean it good, but when it's time to clean it i'm pretty much set on frog lube as my CLP, wanted to know peoples experiences with it. Also a local shop has an Otis M16/M4 cleaning kit, is it a good kit or would i be better off with another one?? if so can someone lead me to a good kit.
frog lube, huh? Assuming you don't work for them...
I have an Otis M4/M16 Soft Pack Kit, it's easy to transport and works well in field conditions for me.
Is it a DI or Piston AR? This will determine the length you need to go to and additional product to help make cleaning easier. I have assembled a kit for myself. I skipped the frog lube do to the cost. I have found better values that perform at least as good. For starters the Bore...I like bore snakes. They are quick, easy and seem to do enough of a job. I also like Bore Foam (Wipe Out or Break Free) for the heavier cleaning. My goal with my kits was to be non-toxic, bio-d and so on...so all products are safe even in not so well ventilated spaces. For Lube/CLP I have found 2 products depending on your round count that work great. If I am going to only shoot under 2K and clean then I recommend Slip 2000 Gun Lube. It is a CLP, Synthetic, rated to 1200 degrees, wont dry up, sticks and stays on parts when shot and it is 21 bucks for 16oz!!! It is nearly identical with Slip 2000 EWL but the EWL has a better longer lasting anti-friction agent that will last longer than 2K on a single application. EWL is 37 for a 16oz...a little pricy but the stuff is absolutely excellent. If you have a DI ar the bolt and BCG will get dirty and carboned up. EWL and Gun Lube will help stop the Carbon from forming and bonding to parts to a degree so cleaning the carbon will not be as bad. I grabbed a bottle of Slip 2000 Carbon Killer. I really like the Slip 2000 products and find them to work well without a ton of cash and effort needed. I drop the bolt in the carbon killer...which once again is Non-tox, Bio-D, more over safe and after 15 mins the carbon wipes off...sometime with a little toothbrush if necessary but not after you start using the EWL and Gun Lube on your AR. I will drop the BCG in as well. Harder to clean the inside of the BCG but with a brush after soaking it is really very easy. Cleaning the Lug Reece is a pain Talon makes a nice tool and so does Dewey for cleaning the chamber and the lugs. To clean all the surfaces and other parts without hurting the aluminum or polymers I like Slip 2000 725 Cleaner Degreaser...imagine that another Slip 2000 product. I also like M-Pro7 Cleaner but it is more expensive. My favorite is the Super Quick Clean Gun....best stuff out! I spray this on the surface to remove the grim, dirty, light carbon, etc. I spray it in the mag well, buffer tube, around the ejection port, chamber and wipe out with a paper towel of old t-shrt. I have a GI Rod brush kit I use for Patches after the deep cleaning of the Bore to lightly lube the barrel bore and that is it. I also like bag o rags (t-shirts rags) or viva paper towel. I have an Otis kit and take it with me to the range more so if I have a problem. The Otis kit is merely my portable kit that I use if I shoot for a long time and cannot get back to cleaning at the house. Oh and one note...forming bore cleaner does a great job on the chamber and lugs as well as the flash hider/muzzle break. Let it sit and do its thing and you will see it is really a time saver!! If you are talking piston ar...this process is at least 1/2 time wise. I do my piston...well I did till I sold it in nearly 10 mins and my DI in 30mins. I am still looking for a tackle box to hold all my stuff.
Q-tips (Longer ones are easier to use) for the locking lugs after I use the foaming bore cleaner....forgot to add that
What is up with the frog lube negativity? I had never heard of the stuff until someone posted a thread asking about it, and got blasted??

I love the stuff but it isnt cheap per oz! I have also used Mobil one and love it to...just smell like a damn car...and not in a good way! A few guys did some corrosion testing on bare metal just recently at one of the other forums and I was impressed to see what EWL did along with EEZOX (Which is also awesome stuff). Mil-Comm didnt do well and some other that had high opinions of tanked too! Oh and mobil one didnt do well on the corrosion test but I seem to like it as a lube...I can shoot 500 round and the bolt is still slick and go to go! BF CLP...not so good on the lasting side. Seems to cook off but I still like it in a pinch..it has done good for me when I need it. I just come to expect its limitations.
The reason I picked frog lube is because of the food grade components, I have 2 year old son that likes to get in to everything and he's all about some gums and if he happen to get into it I won't have any effects on him if he ate it. That one big reason another is I've seen it friends have used and I'm very pleased with it over other brands. Also my ar is a spikes tactical DI with the nickel boron trigger but standard BCG

Frog Lube and Otis, two overrated products. I've tried both. Threw away my otis cables and the frog lube is limited to lubing the tracks of my sliding glass doors. A task that it does extremely well which is not suprising for a product based on rollar coaster track lube.

Their marketing seems to be based heavily on trolling/spamming internet boards.

Define food grade components? Do you even know whats in it? soybean oil? Crisco? Beewax? Paraffin? Mineral oil? Show me an ingrediants list if you expect me to believe its non-toxic.
His what I've read that it's made of 22 food grade plant matter what ones I have no clue....
IBTL!! I have some of this lube you speak of, and so far, i have been impressed with it's cleaning abilities.I have an otis kit also and it is decent but nothing special.

read the tacked thred.
I haven't used Frog Lube on my AR....using Mobil 1. But i did picked up some Frog Lube at my local gun shop a couple months ago and been using it on my Glock and XD45. So far about 1,000 rds through each. It doesn't creep (sticks better the M1 and RP), cleanup after shooting is easy and it smells nice and is non-toxic. Wear is equal or better to any others lubes I have used. but it is not magic....no lube is.....
