I just got my first AK, and field stripped it to have a look. The gas piston has grooves that look like they should have O-rings in them. The piston feels really loose (side-to-side) in there.

The grooves are to delay gas leaking around them, no o-rings are needed. It's ok for the gas piston to be loose on the bolt carrier, don't try to tighten it. The gas piston should not be able to be unscrewed by hand pressure as it's pinned.

The piston actually fits pretty tightly in the rear 1/2 or the gas block. If the rifle functions fine don't worry about it.

Manual here: http://www.box.net/shared/cu2djae1zb that answers many questions.

Hmmm,
I am able to completely unscrew the piston, and remove it from the bolt carrier.

I guess mine is broke...

Make?

Unscrewable is wrong. Check the 'build it yourself' forum for pic and instructions of how it should be pinned.

Yep, the piston should be cross-pinned and not readily removable. Do not shoot your rifle anymore until you fix this.
