What is the best product for stopping rust?
I was wondering is there any specific oil like Hoppes, Rem-oil, or something along that price-range that is best for preventing rust or corrosion on the inside as well as the outside of a gun. Also is there any benefit in cleaning with the dry formula over the regular oil formula?
This isn't really a rust preventative but it works quite well as one. Kroil by Kano Ind.
CLP is very effective as a rust preventative. I use it after cleaning with soapy water when shooting corrosive ammo. No problems with rusting after 2k of corrosive Yugo M67 ball.
Cheap too when you buy by the pint. BSW
Ballistol.

Eezox as a thin, penetrating oil/cleaner, and Weapon Shield as a lubricant. KG-4 oil, produced by the company that makes Gunkote, also works well against corrosion. Never tried Ballistol, but LOTS of folks here swear by it. Ask your question on any gun forum, and someone always brings up Ballistol.
Ballistol works great as a rust inhibitor . It is in the top tier of inhibitors in spite of the age of its formulation.
Plus it is very non-toxic and will not de-fat (dry and crack) your hands. It is also inexpensive and can be mixed with water to make a cleaner. What is not to like
I use Weapons Shield on the serious load-bearing parts and Ballistol for everything else.

I agree...

Once the metal is clean, any quality oil will inhibit rust if properly applied.
The biggest difference is in how often you must reapply it.

There are quite a few of these salt corrosion tests floating around the web. Most people will have their own favorites and swear by them. Pick your poison.
Cheap trick I use is clean Synthetic motor oil (any brand/weight that I have remaining at the bottom of the bottles).
Another trick I learned when shooting trap:
Use a natural hair shaving brush, rub in a few drops of oil into the brush, keep in kit. Periodically brush the exterior metal of the gun with the brush- especially after cleaning. Reload brush as needed.
The product I use most is Rig Universal Grease. You can get it at Birchwood Casey. 1-800-328-6156 Ext. 7934. It's the best stuff I've ever used at stopping rust.
The BEST for your needs...depends on your needs. The best rust preventative I've ever found for patrol rifles that spend 99.99% of their life in a case in a car trunk is RIG gun grease. With a very liberal dose of CLP a close 2nd.
If cleaning with WATER then I'd suggest BALISTOL 110%! GREAT stuff.
I use Rem-Oil on my blued handguns in my collection. They get wiped down, then lovingly placed in a box on rust resistant paper. Some literally sit for years before being looked at again.
Depends on the use,how you clean, etc.

Yeah, that was interesting.
Boeing makes some good stuff, I really like the Boelube for a cutting fluid.
Eezox +1 or Small Arms Weapons Preservative for more long term protection

This stuff is good too.
It's much thicker than CLP.
It won't do it all but it protects very well.
