Spam Cans??
I'm looking at storing some 7.62x39 ammo for long term. I've been looking at getting a handful of spam cans.
I can find Ulyanovsk in a 640rd spam can:
CTD - $127.89
works out to $0.2164 a round (I live in Texas near CTD)
However I cannot seem to find any Yugo ammo in 640rd spam cans. I can find the Yugo ammo in 1120rd crates:
AIM - $182
works to $0.1940 a round (with shipping to Texas)
I was wondering if anyone has seen Yugo ammo in spam cans or smaller crates?
I figured having around 1120rds to 1760rds in permanent storage wouldn't be bad, but I would like to have a variety of 7.62x39 ammo in storage, say half non-corrosive and half corrosive.
How would storing 7.62x39 ammo in .50cal ammo cans long term fair?
I shoot the 5.45 that I get in spamcans from AIM and generally keep 6 or 8 cans on hand. I order more every time I open the 2nd can.
I leave the ammo in the can for storage until I'm low in my shooting stash - 7 loaded mags and 7 reload packets will fit in a .30 can. I imagine the 7.62 mags ought stack in a .50 can with reload ammo just as well. The only thing near as good as the original spamcans for storage is USGI cans with good seals.
Edited. I read more into the question than I ought to have.
Appreciate the advice.
I'm currently storing my mags and ammo in USGI surplus ammo cans. No issue yet with them, but I rotate through my ammo at a decent pace. I'm looking for more long term storage solutions.
For example:
1 - .50cal ammo can stacked with boxes of 7.62x39 ammo (maybe Ulyanovsk) for intermediate use (6months to 1yr)
2 to 3 spam cans stacked in a closet, out of sight, for long-term storage (greater than 1yr)
That stash would be separate from my normal weekly plinking ammo. Kind of a disaster stash one could call it.
The Yugo military surplus you are talking about does NOT come in two spam cans like the Russian, Romanian, Hungarian, Etc. surplus that we see. It will be packed in a single square tin can that fits perfectly in the wooden crate.
You might want to consider buying the smaller spam can from CTD. It is a couple cents per round more, but it will be current production and non-corrosive. The Yugo is military surplus that is a little older. It is still good stuff, but definitely corrosive.
The USGI cans work wonders as long as the seals are good and you don't keep them stored in extreme temperatures. Throw a couple of small dessicant packs in with the ammo you store in them and it will outlast all of us.
50 CAL ammo cans are my preference for sure. Easier to access, and unless they are damaged, they are air and water tight. Last time I checked, centerfire had 1k rounds of modern non-corrosive x39 for $179.50. Might want to look them up, and just pack the boxes into ammo cans.

Uly is non-corrosive commercial ammo. I would go with the Yugo ammo for long term storage and terminal performance.
I store mine in the box and then into ammo cans. You could put some desicant as well if it makes you sleep better @ night.
For spam cans if you can still find the lacquer case brown bear FMJ I might jump on another one. I prefer the lacquer case case to the new polymer coating.

This. And tins or cans in a crate are a great way to store ammo.
I've shot a lot of Uly .223 and 7.62 and while it's really decent ammo I doubt it is held to the production standards that the Yugo was.
70's production Yugo is not old ammo, just ask any of us that have shot up a lot of WWII and Korean War M2 ball and M2AP.
If it were me i'd build up a stash of both, then shoot the Uly and sit on the Yugo.
Sounds like all good advice. I'll probably go with a stash of both. I guess there's nothing wrong with a stockpile of ammo. With my cash flow, I'll have to build it up over time.
My luck in a SHTF situation, I would probably be one of the first guys taken down. IDK say by a car accident. Seems to happen all the time in horror/disaster films; the prepared military-type character dies in the first 5 minutes leaving all his gear to untrained yuppies. Just a thought in the back of my head.
