 Korean 75 rd drums. Issues!

I own a bulgarian 75rd drum that I love. It is made well and works fantastic. It works like a boss no matter how many times I wind it, use it, and release the spring tension. I bought a korean 75 rd drum for a price of $54.95. I cleaned it and loaded it up and took it out for a day of shooting. I wound it up maybe one time before I actually took it out to use it. So here goes, I try to wind it and as soon at it gets a bit of tension it releases. No matter how I try to wind it, no tension. Dud. No bueno. 75 rds of nothing. I got a hold of the supplier and they were good enough to send me a new one.

A week later I received it and cleaned off the cosmoline and got it ready to load. So I loaded it up and wound it. So far so good. I release the spring tension using the center button and wind it again (4 turns). I press the release button. Still good. I go to wind it again......it wont hold any tension. Busted. I never even introduced it to my yugo ak. I wind and release tension on the romanian drum as much as I want with no problems.

If you want to waste your money and time then buy korean ak drums, otherwise buy european surplus magazines. They work amazing and for 10 bux you can couple two together for 60 rds of firepower. Korean made gun parts will never see my money again. Do not buy.

I finally got one that loads and holds tension. Lets hope it can withstand firing! This is the third drum.

Welcome to ARFCOM

My Korean drum works great, sorry you are having so many troubles. Have you checked to make sure there is no debris disengaging the spring?

I bought a Korean 33-round magazine for my Glock, and it turned out to be junk. There are shards of plastic inside the magazine that make it unusable. Can't even load it. The Korean products seem to be low-quality.

You say they are packed in Cosmoline?

Could you please post pics of the packaging your drum comes in, box, plastic, and some pics of it before you clean off the gunk?

My early ones were packed individually in boxes, sealed in bags, and I would like to compare these ones to my very early imported ones, I will gladly post pics of mine, if you can do the same.

Lets see if we can establish some differences between early and these later Korean mags.

Oh BTW SKS, your very first post on this site was to bash the Drums, not doubting your intentions, but please give us some pics as I stated above, if you can, I for one, would like some proof you don't have an agenda, other than to warn us.

There is a link to the video showing the drum above, I will un-box and test the new one as soon as it arrives. It should be this week. I have no agenda except to warn people to save their money.

Okay SKS, is yours an ATI brand drum, that comes in a green box, with an instruction sheet, and a note on how to file the drums rear tab? There is another vid on you tube, that shows a guy getting one like that and loading it.

Mine, as I stated were from the very first ones imported, and they are in a very small, plain cardboard box, sealed in a semi clear, almost clear bag, no instructions, or inserts at all. These were packed 18 to a case.

That video also showed ATI's logo on the key, mine have none.

Pics later. And, please, if any of you remember you packing details, post them, with the results, to see if the failures ARE later ATI Imports, or early plain box, bulk packed ones.

Also on you tube, there is a short vid of one failing to wind, and another user posted that its a small rivet failing on the spring itself, and that appears to be what is happening to yours SKS, at least the same symptoms.

Perhaps a new rivet may fix it?

I just watched the one video where the drum wouldn't get tension and the last part where you loaded a drum and you wound it up (turned the crank) 8 1/4 times.

These Korean Drums are exact copies of Chinese Drums and although I have never owned one of the Korean Drums I have owned a fair share of Chinese Drums and with proper cleaning they have all been flawless.

I would almost guess that your drum that doesn't grab was broken from over tightening. You should only need to turn it 2 complete turns at most (4 half turns)

There is a resource page at the top of the forum on how to properly load these drums

Here is the link

Good luck

Im pretty sure when I watched the video, that the spring was slipping each time the drum handle was turned at a certain point, and in the other utube vid, where the tightening is done with a pair of pliers, you can see the spring let loose more clearly.

The broken rivet appears to be what holds the spring itself, and when it breaks, the sping lets loose every part of a turn.

Listen closely, and you can also hear it.

The korean glock mags are actually very good. The shards of plastic you are referring to is just overflow from where they mold the plastic into the steel frame. EASILY cleaned up in a couple of seconds with a dremel and a polishing wheel

I have 15 of the glock 17 korean mags, and they all work flawless after the cleanup. for $7 vs $20+ each... very worth the extra effort, imo. I added wolff springs to them and now they work better than my brand new glock factory mags, and still cost less than half as much.

Hey frick, it came in a brown box inside a plastic bag with cosmoline. The rivet was fine, just the spring was bad. I can snap some pictures tonight. The drum is imported by SGM Tactical.

I appreciate the info. I wound it 4 ( complete ) turns which is what all the manuals suggest. It broke and I didnt wind it until it "stopped" or anything. I did get a third replacement which works so far. I havent shot it, but it winds and holds tension. So far so good!
