 AK-74 Rear Sight Explanation Needed

Just got an AK-74 (5.45x39) and I need some explanation on how the rear sight works. What is the symbol below the #2?

I zero my AR @ 50 yards to get the flattest trajectory. What would be the 5.45x39 equivalent and setting on the rear sight (how many clicks from the very rear groove)? How do I zero this AK?

The "clicks/grooves" are very close together...how do I know what I'm on a certain setting? For example, if I want 4 do I line up the center of the adjuster to the line below 4?

IIRC the "n" is the battle sight setting and is equivalent to the 300 meter mark.

not quite.

п = поcтoянный or in English CONSTANT.

essentially is used as POA @ center of mass at distances varying from 0 to 300 meters, and you will get a hit somewhere on a man size target.

chinese always cracked me up by incorrectly translating it to "D" for Distance.. as they applied it on their version of Kalashnikovs...

Set sight to 1, zero it at 100 yards, the the "n" (which is the Cyrillic P) is your battle zero to out to 300 yards. For the 7.62 version the P setting was designed to be able to put a round within a 16" circle from 0 to 300 meters with no rang estimation (minute of torso)...point and shoot. 5.45 would probably do it within 6" or so.

To zero it you will need an AK front sight tool from tapco et al. Windage and elevation is adjusted on the front sight. Sadly, there are no clicks to help zeroing so zeroing can include a lot of trial and error.

Also, as you can see from your picture, the top of the slide should touch the line of the range setting you want to be on. Right under 1 for 100 meters, right under 8 for 800 meters. Shoot it, enjoy it. 2 MOA is what you should expect out of it.

Thank you sir. This is on a Krebs Custom AK-74. I'm kinda worried that I will screw up the finish using a front sight tool when adjusting windage. Anyway around this?

My knee jerk is to say It's an AK, it wears its scratches PROUD! That said, I would recommend then putting a piece of electrical tape or some cut tire inter-tube under the pusher onto the sight drum to prevent any marring to the finish from the sight tool.

But, before you do that, set it to 1 and try it at the range, my suspicion is it should already be zero'd and good to go, especially coming from Krebs.
