Name that Jam- AK74 Ejection issues
Ok, I've built about 5 AK's and never had any feeding/extraction issues with any of them. This was an all matching Bulgy 74 kit. On my most recent build, I'm getting random feeding issues (actually it feeds fine, just having ejection issues). I may shoot a whole 30 round mag with only 1 malfunction. Or I may have 5-10 in a mag. At one point, I though it may have something to do with my ejector being out of line, but it's a Nodak Receiver and I've never had any trouble with them. I had 2 different batches of bulg. surplus mags (
with ammo from different lots). I began testing with one batch which is when the feeding issues started up. It just doesn't sling the round out of the gun before it loads the next round. The spent casing ended up in all sorts of directions. I'm trying to decide if it's the ammo or the gun. On mags where it would start to malfunction, when it did manage to extract the cases, it would only throw them maybe 3 feet at my 3 oclock position and then it usually jammed right after that. These mags usually resulted in 5-10 malfunctions per 30. Could it be an underpowered batch of bad ammo, which isn't creating enough pressure to push by carrier back and therefore not enough force to eject the case properly? I did notice that with another batch of the ammo/mags, it would consistently sling the extracted casings about 20 feet to my 3 oclock position and I would only have 1 or 2 malfunctions at the most. I should have done more testing with that other (good) batch of ammo, but I ran out of daylight. Take a look at these jams and tell me if you've ever had any similar experiences. Thanks in advance for your help. I don't know if this is the correct forum to place this topic or not.-Sam

Pull your mag out look through the mag well slowly open the bolt, check to see how close the ejector comes to the bolt.
It should ride in the slot cut down the side of the bolt, (sometimes touching the bolt) if it is to short and does not pass through the face of the bolt deep enough it will cause the FTE problem that your pictures are showing.
You might check the extractor and extractor spring too. Maybe even swap them from another rifle. It could be that they aren't gripping the case rim enough to allow the ejector to flip them out of the ejection port, and instead cases are hitting the ejector and just flopping off of the bolt.
I had the same problem and my ejector was too short, I welded it and refiled it to the proper length, pull your bolt back until it reaches the ejector, it should be almost touching the bolt, there should not be a gap between the ejector and the bolt.

I had the exact same issues with a NDS receiver. The ejector is too short. Have someone build up the ejector with a welder and you'll be ready to go.
Yep me to the ejector was to short I had to add material with a Mig and grind till it was just right.... another thing is check your extractor claw for damage or wear or junk underneath.
welll . .. not necessarily. Yes, welding on the ejector will fix it if the ejector is too short, but on some, the ejector is the right length, but the center support rivet is too wide - this pulls the correct size ejector away from centerline slightly. Same result, different cause.
some NDS-2s in the J00 4000 series had this - corrected int he 5000 series.
