AMD Cheek Riser **Now in use in Afghanistan with new pics**

Check this out.

A local AK builder has been working on a solution to the cheek weld problem with the AMD.

This is an non-permanent solution and its rock solid and brings your eye in alignment with the rear sight, when the weapon is presented on target.

I am not sure if he has plans to make anymore, you may be able talk him into it. vksloan@yahoo.com

Looks functional but not to my tastes. Very ingenious though.

one question though... did your rifle happen to lick a strange frog? j/k

Yes, it heard somewhere it could high doing so.

Actually the camo, the build and the riser was done by the same guy.

Looks like it would interfere with manipulating the safety when the stock is folded.

I made a cheek pad for mine last week, I wrapped the stock in paracord and slipped on a piece of tubular pipe foam insulation. Now the sights are quickly accessed and I have a solid cheek weld. I trimmed everything back to allow the stock to lock in the folded position yet still be the proper length for me. It's with a friend right now who's going to wrap it in suede and lace it at the bottom so it doesn't look like paracord and pipe foam! When I get it back I'll try to post pics.

Due to the solid wire construction interference manipulating the is minimal, its much worse with an underfolder.

Been waiting for the pics. It sounds kinda like a pad on a bmx bike.

I got it back last night and will try to post pics Monday when the wife gets back with the camera. It's not as nice looking as the OP's solution. His blends in with the rifle while mine looks like a crude homemade pad-which it is but I figure you have to go a long way to hurt the looks of a minimalist rifle like this.

There is no cheek weld problem with the AMD65 stock, it's all in your head.

I'm getting ready to purchase an AMD 65 from Atlantic. Is the folding stock made of steel? If it is, I have a MIG welder, I might add an extra piece of tubing for a cheek weld.

This is before modifications, but you can view the build and paint jobs quite well. If it doesn't come through, sorry. Still learning how to post pics

TG, the paint looks much better than in the OPs pics, guess it was just too close of a shot. I retract my "that rifle must have licked an amazon frog" comment.

P.S. See you are on post #1, welcome to arfcom.

edit: if you are located in DFW area and do park jobs then PM me about blasting and park'ing my TGI AMD

This was mine. Wal-mart seat belt pad, $2. Worked great and much more comfortable in the cold. Add some foam on the inside for greater effectiveness.

I am using this riser in Afghanistan and so are several other Contractors. It has performed well, it really is a night and day difference.

I used to not like the AMD due to the wire stock, now it like the AMD much more that the fixed stock AKM.

There is a new revision being made that is slightly longer and slightly lower, based on the collective testing and input received in Afghanistan

It should better accommodate multiple shooting styles, positions and kit the user may be wearing.

Hi Joe. We have had a tremendous amount of inquiry and sales already, thanks to you! The new design, replacing the paracord with nylon tubing, looks great. Love it on your AMD.

We are getting another package ready for you. Stay safe.

Can you fire the AMD-65 with the stock folded when the riser is installed? I.E., does it obstruct the ejection of spent casings?

Just real simple issue stuff. Protective Products International plate and soft armor carrier with a Blackhawk Rhodesian chest rig. Nothing special really.

How does a person go about ordering one of these risers for their AMD? I figure the end user can install it themselves?

I ordered a riser for my AMD 65. It is rock solid, period. Plus, the fellow who designed the riser certainly knows his AKs. He has helped me out with a couple jams already, no charge. All I did was email him my problem and he called me at home, walked me through the problem. Yes, I am a new to the AK's. I decided to get one for the heck of it.

Good guy, good stuff, great advice/help. I will be doing business with him in the future.

I must be the odd man out. I ordered this item and found out after the fact that you have to remove the recoil pad, drill holes, and dremel your wire stock to get it to work.
I just emailed him for return info so I can get a refund. Haven't heard from him yet.
Buyer beware.

HUH? It is a simple bolt on item.

What are you taking about?

This has no contact with the recoil pad?

The only thing I can possibly imagine is you are talking about the one for the East German type folder. He does make two different types.

This is a great product! Look at what Jim Fuller at Rifle Dynamics had to say:

From Jim Fuller, Rifle Dynamics 2/4/10

I received the AMD65 stock upgrade recently from AMD-65 Tech. I installed it on my AMD select fire dealer sample which is one of the worst cheek welds there is especially in full auto.

The product is made well and comes with the hardware for installation. Tools required are a screwdriver and wrench or pliers to hold the nut while you tighten them. The screws for attachment are short and not easy to get started but they need to be short or they will dig into your face. Once I got it installed it tightens up easily and holds very well. I recommend loctite to keep it in place.

After installing it I went out and shot 200 rounds on full auto, the parts stayed in place and made what used to be an unpleasant shooting experience very nice. I have since shot another 300 rounds through the gun with no problems.
Better cheek weld is an improvement that the AMD has needed badly and this product is the best I've seen for the job.
Buy with confidence!!

I got one. It took some pretty extensive modifications to get mine to work. I probably should have just sent it back and gotten a new one, but I am extremely stuborn, so I made it work.

I like it so far, haven't really used it too much, but it does raise the comb of the stock up a bit. I'll post some pics when I get home.

ETA -

Here are some pics. You can see in that the rubber bumper on the top of the stock needed to be removed. You have to carve it up to still use it with the cheek riser, but I didn't feel like messing with it. There is a steel dowel holding it in that need to be pried out, which took a little more work than I thought it would. You also need to expand the hole in the stock to bolt the rear of the riser in. That romanian steel is hard as hell, I smoked a new drill bit on it. The supplied screw seemed to short too use, so I used the longer intended to hold the rubber stock bumper in place if reinstalled. The front clamp also wouldn't fit without mods, as the hole in the front of the riser was too high, creating too large of an offset with the stock. The guy selling them offered to replace it, but as noted, I made it work without too much effort. If you wrap it in paracord you need to gut the core of it, otherwise it will hit the charging handle when folded.
