I was in a pawn shop today and they had an underfolding Norinco AK with "MAK-90" stamped on the side. None of the handguards, rear grip, or FCG were marked "US". The rifle was in excellent shape and almost looked unfired. I asked the guy if he knew the year it was produced and he just shrugged his shoulders and said it was on consignment for one of his regulars. Were any underfolding MAK-90s imported or is this an illegal rifle in violation of sec. 922r? I am hoping it is somehow a pre-1989 rifle because the price was cheap...$599

Some underfolding preban Chinese AK's were on the boat towards the US when the ban hit, so they were converted to Mak 90's so they could be sold. The holes for the underfolder were plugged, & the butthole stock was put on, but the gun can easily be converted back to an underfolder. The gun is perfectly legal to own, because whoever buys it did not convert it. Only the importer or person who converts it is obligated to put on the US parts. GARY N4KVE
the first two digits of the serial number are usually the year it was made, mine says 93
Thanks for the info.
Where in NC was said Ak located? I think that a personal inspection will devulge more information.

It is at Big Sky Gun and Pawn in Apex, NC. Go for it, I don't have the funds for it anyway.

Can you explain more on this?
I'm trying to figure out what I'm up against on "unbanning" a MAC-90.
According to what you are saying, if someone converts one and sells it to you, you aren't obligated to make it compliant? I can't believe this...
