Went up to the woods today and fired a couple of hundred rounds through my new-to-me Polytech sidefolder. It's a preban AKS in very nice shape, not a safe queen, but more than a typical shooter. I paid a bit too much for it, but your "never buried in a diamond" as we used to say in the car business. The workmanship is fantastic when compaired to my Yugo underfolder. Fit, finish, blueing and overall feel are superior to the AK's I've been around before. The sites are prefectly straight and it's accrate as far as my old eyes can see. None of the problems I had with my Yugo. All the numbers match and the guns had little use. The stock locks up tight, no play what so ever (take that UF). This ones a keeper. Hate to say this, but the Chinese really put together a nice weapon here. I'm already looking at a Norinco Type 56-S1, a .223 new in box underfolder. Please stop me!!!

I know what you mean. My dad bought me a Polytech spiker in 1987 for my high school graduation present, and it is still fired on a regular basis, which makes some people cringe! But, in my opinion, AK's were made to be fired, not set in a safe and look pretty. I still remember my dad saying that he couldnt figure why I wanted " a damn chink rifle" instead of a nice Remington or Winchester! LOL!! But, Im glad to see there are others out there who use the AK for its intended purpose! I hope you enjoy your new toy!!

I picked a up Legend NIB lately with all accessories and litature. I'll probably never shoot it.
I'm not up on current pricing but I paid $1,200 for it. I don't know if that was all that good of a deal or not. But I couldn't pass it up, opportunities like that don't come very often in a lifetime, not around here anyway.
You need that Type 56-S1. I say go for it.

Shoot it when you can. Otherwise you'll never know the difference between the smooth action of them and the newer-made stuff out there. It's minor but a definate noticeable difference.

Your right about that. Smooth as silk, nearly AR 15 smooth. You can only imagine how much work I put into my first AK to get it to shoot as well. The nicest thing about this gun is how well the sidefolder locks up. Not a bit of play when locked up, and comfortable to shoot as well. I will enjoy it.

Yeah, he knows the value of them now. Funny thing is, I finally got him to fire it, and once he did, he went and bought himself one!

I love to see these "got my first Chineee AK" and I can't believe how great it is.

WHAT!

You really didn't expect a rifle built in the same factory as its uber evil full auto brethren to be good?

Compared to a parts kit, assembled on a US made receiver?

Heavier receiver to boot.

Welcome to the evil chineee dark side, You will never go back.

PSSSSSTTTT, wanna touch my NDM-86?

Only ten bucks, and you can take a picture of yourself holding it for 15 bucks more......

Polytech's rock! I scored a Legend last year and I shoot it as often as possible. Looking to get a folding spiker next, Chinese AK's are the best!

I have a pre ban spiker that I really only have pre ban money in.

I bought one of the first Norinco semi AKs that came in. I wasn't really impressed with it and sold it. Started seeing the Type 56 pictures in the Shotgun News and loved the spike bayonet and knew I had to get one. Found one at the next gun show for...drum roll please....$275 out the door (yes this was many years ago, before any one ever even thought up the term "semi auto assault rifle" but was still dirt cheap.

Chinese corrosive steel core ammo I was buying for $79 for 1440 rounds, and I bought a truck load of it, and shot it all through that one poor AK.

By the time the ban came, that rifle had about 15-20,000 rounds of the corrosive stuff through it. Since the rifle was so inexpensive, some times I would take it home after shooting and throw it in the corner with out cleaning it. After a couple of days I would get around to it, spray the whole thing with CLP to get it apart, wire brush the rust off of the bolt carrier group and inside the gas tube (bore and chamber were never a problem, seems the Chinese chrome is good stuff lol.) and she was good to go until the next time.

Ban time. Prices jump sky high. I clean ol girl up and take her to the show. Box long gone, one mag and the sling that came with it and still got 800 bones for her. Missed her from the time I let go of her sling and watched dude walk out the door with her.

Fast forward to 2007. I hit my favorite local Fun shop. In the rack behind the counter sits what looks like a brand new, never fired Poly spiker. Regret set in again as I leaned forward to look at the tag, expecting the usual $1500 price I usually saw on them when ever I ran across them. Tag said $799. I leaned closer, expecting to see the 1 my aging eyes missed at the beginning of that number.

Nope, it WAS $799. I called one of the guys over and asked to look at it. He hands it to me and I am in love all over again. I ask if it ok to strip it. Pop the top cover, remove spring, bolt carrier group. If this thing had ever been fired, damned if I could tell it. No thought, no haggle, nothing.

"I'll take it!" and she was mine. Best part, it came in the original box, with every thing that is supposed to be in there, manual, sling, three chrome follower mags etc.AND an east German mag pouch with FOUR MORE mags. I'll never let this one go, for love or money.

I got 800 out of my tired, mistreated rifle and through absolute luck, replaced it with a brand new one for the same money, so I actually still have the original $275 of the original in this one you see!

And here she is (although she is no longer unfired, I take much better care of her than I did before.)

Sorry for the long story, but it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when I think about it.

Its ok, I get all warm and fuzzy when I remember getting my spiker. Him shelling out $385 for the rifle and 2 cans of chicom ammo, while asking me why I wanted a "damn chink rifle", only to end up buying one himself a couple of months later!
