Polytech AKS-223 Underfolder
Hi Guys,
This is my first post and of course I have a question for the experts. The only AK I had was a pretty fun Arsenal SGL21 that I would mess around with at the range. I went looking for something cool and different last week and stumbled upon an unfired pre-ban Polytech Underfolder in 5.56 at my local shop (great shop filled with hard to find guns). After getting it home I realized that I should have asked a few important questions. Is it okay to shoot away at this like I would a regular AK, or should I treat it like a collectible and put it in the safe? Also, how hard is it to find correct 30 round mags? Thanks.
Mags are expensive.. about $85 to $100 each.
Polytech rifles in .223/5.56 only take Polytech mags in .223/5.56. Not even Norinco (The other Chinese 5.56) are interchangeable. Polytech 5.56 mags are probably the most difficult to find / expensive AK mags out there. Check Gunbroker.

What Shop? Zero Hour?
these are truly some of the finest and best built AK rifles, the mags are expensive but if the gun comes with 2 or 3 who cares. A true NIB gun might be a shame to foul but that is what they are made for. All depends on whether you are a shooter or collector. In my opinion the early poly-tech and Norinco guns are only rivaled in quality by the 'kassner' Hungarian SA-85M, 'Mitchell' Yugo and Steyr Maadi. These sort of guns where built to perfection, before the times where overall profit outweighs quality, such as the "Frankenstein-euro-trash" of the last decade
Not Zero Hour, it was from GFA Armstec in Natick.
I decided not to shoot it, and I do still have that Arsenal SGL-21 for the range. I'm not really a collector so I'm thinking I may sell/trade it away to someone who actually collects. I know they are much more rare than other Polytechs, and it is a really low serial number.
