Romanian AK's going up in price?

I was looking on Gunbroker and saw a blurb for an AK that talked about the plant in Romania closing down causing Romanian AK's to get higher in price.....anyone heard of this or is this a creative sales technique?

It said, "Century is totally sold out of them and the Cugir facility where they are made in Romania has recently had trouble with their government over exporting into the USA. This is why the prices on all Romanian guns have risen and why availability has gone down so much. It is unclear what is in store for the future for these imported AK type rifles."

I don't know about GB but there is something on classic arms about the prices going up.

I have two theories. Firstly, don't trust anything you read on gunbroker, it's probably about as accurate as those "OMG, UnitedNationsObamacareSocialistHitlers gonna take our guns!" emails floating around.

-I think that Romania is finally realizing that the WASR-10, for the price, cannot really be competed with and know their market is secure, so is raising prices a little bit.
OR
-Century is facing a lawsuit, has to make a settlement, or has lost their shirt somehow over the 5.45 keyholing scandal and needs a boost in revenue.

IF the prices go up it will probably be due to a combination of two things: 1. The original barrels can't be used due to the .gov ruling last year. New production barrels cost more than 30 years old barrels, which are essentially free.
2. The .gov has been printing a lot of money for about a year. The Romanians aren't stupid. They know that when the .gov prints money that reduces the value of the dollar. So they want more of the devalued dollars in exchange for their rifles.

When Century pays more for the rifle, so does the consumer

This strikes me as the most realistic/rational answer. Prices haven't exactly skyrocketed, but seems the guns have gone up about $30 –– $40 a pop.

Forgive me for not keeping up with the new laws but I have a question...

All imported AK's now have to have the barrels replaced? Why?

No. that's only for an imported 'assault weapon'. A sporter, such as a Saiga or the Bulgy SSR-85s, are not 'assault weapons', and thusly can come in. The barrels thing was a ruling by ATF. Previously, parts kits could come in with just the receiver destroyed. Now, since 2005, the barrel must be demilled as well.

The ruling does not affect all imported AKs. It applies to those which formerly had barrels which had been installed on another (military) rifle.
In 2010 the .gov ruled that WASRs could not be imported if it had the barrel that was on the original rifle (Remember that WASRs are made by demilling an existing rifle and reassembling the parts on a new receiver).
The .gov "reasoned" that since the statutes prohibit importing the barrel for a surplus military rifle and since the barrel was once installed on a military rifle that was surplus, the original barrel was a surplus barrel and could not be imported even though it had been installed on a rifle that met the "sporting use" requirement.
Since that ruling WASRs have new production barrels to avoid the new interpretation.
ETA: It's not a "new law". It's been on the books since '68. It's a new interpretation of the existing law.

With WASRs at about $425-450, SARs are up at least to that point because they are desirable...

Local gun shop just got 5 WASR's. $550 each, he said they are getting harder to get. With that price point it makes sense to spend

another $100-$200 for the next level AK. Possibly a Polish. Sorry, WASR's just aren't worth it. I'd rather spend $275 - $300 for a decent SKS.

Does this ruling apply to a Draco C pistol? My Draco C has 1968 stamped on the front trunnion, meaning the original gun was from 1968, including the barrel. So is my barrel from 1968, or a new barrel? Thanks. GARY N4KVE

Nope, a Draco is a pistol. The rule applies to Mil-Surp rifles only.

The ban on importing barrels applies to any barrel for a firearm which cannot be imported, not just rifles. Military surplus firearms cannot be imported.
To my knowledge the .gov has not applied that interpretation to the Draco barrels. That could be because from a legal viewpoint the barrel is now a pistol barrel and the Romanians never made a military issue pistol using that barrel. "Logically", if it wasn't part of a military pistol it's not considered to be "surplus".

Yes, anyone have links?

I bought my WASR back in 2006 for $250.00. Glad I got it then but I should have bought two more. Oh well.

OR the dollar is in the toilet due to QE2 and the Romanians need to charge more to keep the same buying power.

Fuck the free market. The government needs to step in and make WASRs affordable for the average American.
