how hard is it to acquire one of these ak47s? i was reading up on them and i learned that the egyptian ak47s were made based on the russian ideology behind them.... or that the russians had trained the egyptians how to make them... i want one bad, where can i get one and are they very expensive?

You can't have one, I asked first so get in line!

I got one last month and like it. Here's the story as I've heard it: some of the Egyptian Maadis are crap, others are fantastic. Some consider the early ones to be the closest thing to the Russian model. Price can range from $300-1200 from what I've observed so far, and it's really a gamble whether the one you get will be a decent one or crappy.

I've seen them regularly on gunbroker and occasionally here on Equipment Exchange.

Maadi uses Russian tooling and training to make their rifles. The early prebans, imported by Styer, were considered one of the best AKs availible by many. Later the Intrac imported ones, were pretty good except for their finish. Now CIA are building them and those are really hit or miss. This info is from what i've read over the years. I have an Intrac Maadi and its shoots great and I've had no problems.

As a rule, you should avoid the Century Import Rifles. Pretty much any of the others are pretty decent, but you will either need to learn to live with a cheesy, cheap finish (looks like paint), or refinish one. I recently saw a NIB Maadi that was an Intrac import (I think) at a local shop for $450. Find a good used one for about $300-350, preferrably one with the muzzle nut tack-welded over muzzle threads and convert it over into a great rifle.

Here's my Intract Maadi ARM that I bought back in 1994 for a whopping $230. I sandblasted off the old crappy paint finish, refinished with MolyResin semi-gloss black, removed the tack welded muzzle cap and added a US made slant brake and added some furniture from Z_Recto.
