Chinese Military SKS
I have been offered a Chinese Military SKS in a trade. supposedly its a pre-ban rifle with the blade bayonet. no import marks either (possible bring back?). dated 1956. I know nothing about the SKS. being in god condition what you put the value at? Thoughts on the rifle as far as collectible, etc?
thx!
There are no Chinese SKS's that have "dates" on them. A 1956 Chinese is called a Sino-Soviet, as they were made with Russian parts in China. The only reason that they can be narrowed down to late 1955 and 1956 is because that's when the Russians sold the tooling and parts.
A Sino-Soviet will have a serial number with one letter and four numbers. Mine is V2536. Not many are completely matching, and if you find one that is all original, it can fetch a premium of up to $400 or more. Most are in the $3-350 range.
An original Sino will have a star on the right side buttstock, blade bayonet, and a side sling swivel. Whether it has import marks or not, it would be difficult to discern if it was a bring-back or not without capture papers. Quite a few escaped import marking.
If it has a star with an arrow through it on the top of the receiver with a date under it, It is russian not chinese. Mine is dated 1952.
The last dated Russians were 1955, and those were few as most were undated. There are purported to be some 1956 Russians, but how can anyone be sure as all the late ones had no dates?
The earliest "other" model with dates stamped on the receiver were Romanians in 1957.

In order to be sure that there are no import marks you have to field strip the rifle.
Many early imports are marked on the barrel where the marks are not visible until the barrel and receiver is removed from the stock. In addition many of the import and caliber markings are very small and not very deep.

God condition is worth quite a bit more, ya know.
SKS in good condition goes for $200-$300 around here. It's only a bring back if they have papers. Buy the rifle, not the story.
