Yugo SKS Semi-Auto Firing Problem
A friend and co-worker of mine purchased a Yugo SKS a while back. Took it out to the desert and if fired without a hitch. He purchased a Tapco (Crapco, I know...) replacement stock and a bi-pod, but that was the extent of his modifications. Took the rifle out a few weeks later, and suddenly it starts acting up. Shoots clean the first couple rounds then starts jamming/ won't discharge the spent casings. We fiddle around with it for a while, clean it out real well, and still no dice. So he gives it to me, and being the good friend I am I replace the gas valve and button for him (Christmas gift) and clean/ dry out the gas block real well. He takes it out again, and its still giving him problems. So, we're going out this Thursday (maybe) and he's got a new gas tube we're going to install and see if that makes a difference. The problem seems to be that there's just not enough gas driving the piston back. The bolt slides and move without issue and there's no obstructions that we can tell, and no permanent modifications have been made to the gun.
Is there anything else we should try?
Sounds like you have had alot of it apart but. Have you take it apart in detail make sure its clean?
Extractor
op rod etc.
My buddy has cleaned it from top to bottom, if it moves it got scrubbed and oiled.
I'm at a complete loss.
Yugo 66/59's have a gas turn-off valve near the front sight. Check it.

Did that, that was the first thing we checked. The gun seems to be short cycling.
Maybe shooting underpowered ammo? I bought a bunch of those plastic training rounds back in the late 80's and they wouldn't cycle my SKS...

The ammo being used is Ulyanovsk Cartridge Works 122Gr FMJ. It's the same ammo I'm running in my AK and aside from the rare dud round, it shoots and cycles just fine. Not sure if the AK has a stiffer action than the SKS or not, what would be a good brand of ammo to look for to try this theory out with?
I've had good luck with Brown Bear and Golden Tiger having some ooomph behind them. I can't speak for anyone else. If money is no object, try some good old "made in the USA" ammo. Winchester, Remington, Hornady, or anyone else that is in stock, you only need a box or two to find out if the ammo might be the problem.
I have a Galil that just will not shoot Wolf, it jams up ever 3 or 4 rounds with a short stroke, but if I feed it Brown Bear it runs all day long.
darn looks like you covered everything, Except
Try different ammo
put it back in original stock (not sure how it would even matter but never know, and looks like we are out of options)
Bought a box of BrownBear, and a box of American Eagle. We're going to scrub every nook and cranny on this thing till it squeaks, take it out tomorrow and see what's what. If all else the shop he bought it from has offered to send it off for repairs. It shouldn't come to that though.
I'll post an update tomorrow.
Take the original stock with you, as already mentioned. If the ammo doesn't fix it, try switching it back to the old stock and see what happens then.

The Tapco stock came off first thing, that was our first suspect. The only thing that's still off is the bayonet, and that doesn't do anything to begin with. Everything else is back to the way it came when it was first purchased.
Sounds like a gas leak
Where did you get the valve you put in the rifle?
Replace the gas valve:

Right from there as a matter of fact!

The gas valve is the most common problem with the Yugo sks, I beat it is the problem.

The new one fits in pretty tight, I even cleaned out the gas block with some gun oil and q-tips, then dried it thoroughly for good measure. We'll have the new gas tube on it as well, and with the American Eagle ammo I'm confident there shouldn't be any hiccups.
I'll get pics if it's still screwing up after that.
Success! The new gas tube did the trick. Shot just fine even with the surplus rusky ammo.
Glad to hear you got it running. Was he able to put his new stock back on it and keep it running?

We actually ran it with the Tapco stock instead of the wood one. The gun was short stroking even with the American Eagle ammo. After looking it over again I noticed that the button for the grenade launcher wasn't quite all the way over. After being a bit rough with it, it shifted over more and we reloaded it. Shot just fine after that. I still think it's not fully over still, since we did have a few stove-pipe jams, but other wise no other issues came up.
