What is up with the change in the Glock slide color?
My old Glock slides are a satin black, a newer G30 is a light black.
Has Glock changed its tennifer process?

Yes, no, yes, no.
It doesnt matter. The tennifer/melonite is STILL fine. The Black oxide coating that they use has changed several times over the course of the years.
The bottom line is that the bare metal being protected by the surface hardening treatment is still protected....very, VERY well.
For the thousandth time tennifer has no color. It's a metal protection process. The finish on a glock depends on whatever they had around at the time of production. Sometimes is the dark slick finish, sometimes it's the grey-ish dull finish.
I can tell that the new outer finish does not hold up nearly as well as the finish on the earlier gen 3s.I bought a new 19 probably 3 months or so ago and I'm already seeing silver. It doesn't bother me much as the steel is still protected, but it seems to wear quite a bit faster than the glossy finish from a few ago.
There was a change to the Tenifer process that coincided with the change to the exterior finish.
As per armorer school and a Glock rep, they dropped "Tenifer" for a non patented nitrate that doesn't use cyanide.
So, does it hold up and protech as well as teh original Tennifer finish?

Yup...
I have a Glock 37, circa 2008, that has the poly/glossy finish. The thing is absolutely immune to every kind of environment I've ever put it through.
I have a Glock 19, circa 2011, that has the flat grey "parkerized" looking finish. The thing gets covered with surface rust after an honest day of CCWing (I just posted a pic in the tacked photo thread)
It really bothers me, but I guess as long as it's only surface rust it's fine...

I just went to that thread to look at the pic. I can't believe it! I've never seen a Glock do anything like that. Wow!

I'd be on the phone with glock. That is NOT normal. Even with the grayer finish.

Agreed.
I have both finishes. They both work for me.
Something went really wrong in the nitrocarburization procces on that slide. That rust is -not- finish related but TREATMENT related.
HTR.
Unacceptable.
Well shit, I'm at least glad to hear that it isn't typical of the new flat grey finish.

Just got back from work today and it had rust in the same places again, which rubs off but leaves discolored spots on the slide. I guess a call to Glock is in order.

Absolutely, rust exacerbates my OBS, please, keep us posted
Damn, your Glock reminded me of my long time ago sold east german P226, that damn thing would rust over night.
HTR.
I guess I'll start a thread about it when I call Glock. Only problem is my G19 is my only CCW piece. I refuse to go without a CCW because I run a store and I'm very often the only one there. So if Glock wants me to send it in, it'll have to wait until I can pick up something to substitute for it. I won't put myself out there, alone, unarmed, at the mercy of whatever face-eating predators exist in south Phoenix.

Hmm, I've been meaning to pick up a J-frame for a little deeper concealment...
Is nitrocarburization the replacement for the tenifer process?

No. Nitrocarb, IS the TENIFER process. The color is given by a -finish- that could be either parkerizing or black oxide. The almost rust proof surface is accomplished by this -process-treatment called TENIFER-nitrocarburization-QPQ-melonite etc. Something must have gone really wrong when they applied this treatment (which you can either call TENIFER or nitrocarb) on your slide.
Get a Glock26 as back up, you will not regret it.
HTR.
I agree with HUNTER, grab a G26 so you can send in that 19.
Speaking of Glock issues

Are we still having ejection issues with the latest batch of Gen3 9mm Glocks? I might diversify... pick up a 27 or a 36 or a 33 or something.... Or an M&P Shield

I've got 6 Glock .40s, all models (35, 22, 23, 27), all Gen3, with serials ranging as early as NXX through as late as RXX (all falling within the range of possible ejection problems). All 6 of the .40s have been 100% and exhibit strong 4:00 ejection. I know there have been some reported issues with .40s but they are much rarer than with 9mm. I would be confident buying a Glock .40 right now, probably not a Glock 9mm. It's unfortunate what has happened to the mighty Glock 9mm.

OK. Well thanks for the info, Hunter223 and Hero. If/when this happens I'll start a thread about it here for the benefit of the hive mind. I agree about the 9mm Glocks; what first got me into Glocks was the legendary reliability. It makes me sad that they are having such issues now.
