What does everyone use around here for plinking/HD and what grain sizes?

Have a P229 9mm on the way.

For plinking I use 115gr wwb and blazer ammo, or pretty much any decent brass ammo. For HD I use 124 gr +p gold dots.

For target...
I'll shoot anything cheap in FMJ with a brass case for plinking or target shooting. Right now, best I'm finding is about $10.50 a box (of 50).

For defense...
I keep Winchester 147 grain T-series loaded up for defense...it's a heavy bullet, so it offers good penetration (I've seen one go through one car door and stop at the exterior sheet metal of the other door) and the T-series projectile is designed for expansion. I also like that they're not loaded to super hot chamber pressures, so recoil flip is minimal and follow up shots can be made as fast as they can with target ammo. They're relatively affordable too (around $27-30 for 50 rounds), so I don't mind shooting a box every now and then, just to keep familiar with how it shoots from my pistols. I like to get a few 50 round boxes from the same lot...shoot one box through my pistol(s) and then load the other box (or two) up. After a year or two, I'll fire the ones I have and then buy a few boxes of a newer batch.

This is the same load that used to be called "Black Talons" until the anti gun lobby decided being black and pointy made them too scary...so Winchester kept the pointy jagged edges of the expanded bullet, but dropped the black coating. (Yes Winchester, I like your style. )

There are a ton of good defense loads out there...I say just pick one that shoots well from your pistol and then buy a couple hundred rounds worth of the same lot. Test some and then load the rest up.
